Product description

Cakebread Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 originates from the United States, within the California region and the prestigious Napa Valley subregion. Founded in 1973 by Jack and Dolores Cakebread, the estate has spent decades establishing a benchmark reputation for high-quality, family-run winemaking. The winery's operational philosophy relies on blending fruit sourced from distinct pockets across the appellation to balance different microclimates and soils. This approach highlights the bold fruit intensity of legendary locations like Rutherford and Oakville alongside structural depth contributed by the warmer northern reaches of Calistoga and the cooler southern pockets of the Suscol watershed.

Wine Description

This red wine presents a dark ruby or deep garnet appearance in the glass and possesses a full-bodied structure with a refined, balanced, and elegant texture. The sensory profile is highly fragrant, complex, and layered, opening with an expressive nose of plush blackcurrants, mulberries, ripe blackberry, and boysenberry, seamlessly complemented by notes of dark chocolate, baking spices, violet, and toasty oak. On the smooth, round, and sumptuous palate, it delivers concentrated dark fruit flavours, spiced black plum, olive tapenade, and cedar, beautifully balanced by fresh, bright acidity and a fine hint of rock minerality. The finish is dry, long, and persistent, leaving a lingering impression framed by finely integrated, velvety tannins.

  • Varietal Composition: A classic Bordeaux-style blend composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, 2% Syrah, and 1% Cabernet Franc.

  • Stylistic Notes: The wine is celebrated for its purity, structural focus, and immediately approachable early drinkability while retaining excellent aging potential. To preserve maximum freshness and natural acidity, the grapes are hand-harvested in the cool night, followed by hand-sorting, destemming, and a partial crush to optimize color and skin tannin extraction. The wine was aged for 17 months in French oak barrels consisting of 52% new and 48% neutral oak before being bottled in April 2024.

  • ABV: 14.5%.

  • Organic Status: While the estate operates with a dedicated focus on environmental sustainability as a certified Napa Green winery, this commercial release is not certified organic.

Food Pairing

The structural concentration, robust fruit layers, and integrated tannins of this Napa Cabernet Sauvignon make it a spectacular match for rich, savory gastronomy.

  • Meats: Pairs beautifully with premium cuts of grilled steak, an andouille-crusted filet mignon, beef Wellington, a steakhouse cheeseburger, or pork meatballs served with braised peppers.

  • Game & Poultry: Complements rich wild game preparations like venison empanadas served with golden raisins and pecans, or a slow-cooked beef brisket.

  • Heavy Fare: Matches gracefully with classic steakhouse dinners, hearty pasta dishes, or roasted vegetables with a rich, savory profile.

Vintage Quality

The 2022 growing season in Napa Valley was characterized by a mild and relatively even climate during the summer months, which promoted a moderate heat progression and steady grape ripening. Persistent drought conditions across the region naturally controlled vine vigor and reduced yields, which allowed the remaining grape bunches to accumulate highly concentrated flavors and deep aromatic profiles. The winemaking team's skill in executing a carefully timed harvest from August to October and utilizing a pre-fermentation 'cold soak' to soften the skins successfully translated these dry vineyard conditions into a balanced, majestic triumph.
