About the Estate
In 1962, Primo Pacenti founded Azienda Agricola Canalicchio di Sopra amidst the breathtaking hills of Siena in northeastern Montalcino. Extending across nearly 60 hectares—20 of which are cultivated organically with vines alongside 2 hectares of olive groves—the estate was built on a firm belief in the region's extraordinary potential for crafting world-class, age-worthy wines.

After producing its first bottle of Brunello di Montalcino in 1966, Canalicchio di Sopra made history in 1967 as one of the twelve founding members of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino. Today, three generations live and work together on the estate, carrying forward Primo's foundational vision: to produce the absolute highest quality Montalcino expression possible while blending deep-rooted tradition with fresh innovation.

1. Canalicchio di Sopra Rosso Di Montalcino DOC 2024

Tasting Notes:

"The 2024 Rosso di Montalcino marries the vintage's elegance with the pure and complex house style. Crushed black cherries and cedary spices meet lifting nuances of mint and dusty rose as this evolves in the glass. It’s silken and dense, with a wave of ripe red berry fruits and vibrant acidity underscored by crisp minerality... This is a baby Brunello by every stretch of the imagination."

2. Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello Di Montalcino DOCG 2020
Score: 95 Points – James Suckling

Tasting Notes:

"Graceful style to this wine, with earthy strawberries, cinnamon and sweet violets. Almost yellow stone-fruit, too. Full in body with crisp if not zesty acidity and intense, extracted and firm tannins giving a tight mid-palate. Yet, the finish is long and polished."  

3. Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino “Vigna La Casaccia” DOCG 2018

Tasting Notes:

"From more clay-based soils, the 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino Vigna Casaccia pours a bit deeper ruby color and is riper and broader in its feel, with deeper notes of fresh black cherries, mocha, and pressed flowers. Medium to full-bodied, it offers more richness on the palate, with ripe tannins and good concentration... Long on the palate, with a great finish, it’s a very successful and more age-worthy wine for this vintage."

4. Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino “Vigna Montosoli” DOCG 2018

Tasting Notes:

"The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Montosoli is quite Burgundian in style, slowly awakening in the glass with a delicate mix of sweet herbs, crushed violet candies, hints of spiced orange and wild strawberries. It boasts a stunning purity of fruit and inner sweetness, seeming to hover across the palate... finishing long, lightly structured and with immaculate balance. This is the first official vintage of Vigna Montosoli... growing in both volume and depth."
