Product description
Introduction
The Château Calon Ségur 2005 is a legendary Third Growth (3ème Cru Classé) red wine from the Saint-Estèphe appellation in Bordeaux. This vintage is widely celebrated as one of the modern-day "triumphs" of the estate, emerging from a near-perfect growing season in the Médoc. The 1.5 Litre (Magnum) format is especially prized for this specific wine; because Calon Ségur 2005 is known for its formidable tannic structure and "backstrapping" traditional style, the larger bottle ensures a slower maturation, preserving the fruit's freshness while allowing the tannins to soften more gracefully over decades.
Wine Description
The 2005 Calon Ségur is a powerful, uncompromising Bordeaux that reflects the estate’s historic reputation for producing "masculine" and structured wines.
Varietal Composition: A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. (Some sources note small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are also in the vineyard mix).
Aromatic Profile: The nose is complex and noble, featuring intense aromas of black cherry, crème de cassis, and plum. These are layered with sophisticated secondary notes of damp earth, wood smoke, cedar, and exotic Asian spices. Critics also note a subtle "ferrous" or mineral edge and hints of chocolate.
Palate and Body: This is a full-bodied and "broodingly tannic" wine. It possesses a dense, concentrated texture with layers of ripe black fruit. Despite its power, the 2005 vintage has put on significant weight with age, resulting in a textured, velvety mouthfeel that balances the high tannin levels.
Structure: Defined by its incredible density and "aristocratic poise." The tannins are firm but fine-grained, supported by fresh acidity that suggests a massive aging potential.
Winemaking: The Merlot was harvested in late September, followed by the Cabernet in early October. The wine was aged in 100% new French oak, providing a structural framework that is now beautifully integrated.
ABV: 13% to 13.5%.
