Product description
This legendary Premier Grand Cru Classé dry white wine originates from France, within the Pessac-Léognan appellation of the Graves region in Bordeaux. Château Haut-Brion holds a unique place in wine history as the only estate outside the Médoc included in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Managed today under the leadership of Prince Robert of Luxembourg and Domaine Clarence Dillon, the estate produces an exceedingly rare white wine—often in quantities under 1,000 cases per vintage—that is widely celebrated as one of the greatest dry whites in the world. Grown on deep gravel terraces resting over clay and sand subsoils, Haut-Brion Blanc represents the ultimate expression of Graves terroir.
Wine Description
In the glass, the 2018 vintage displays a brilliant pale gold-yellow color with vibrant green highlights. The expressive and multifaceted nose opens with an incredible bouquet of white peach, candied lemon peel, pink grapefruit, and ripe pear, seamlessly integrated with nuances of honeysuckle, linden flower, toasted hazelnut, crush gravel minerality, and fine oak spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied, majestic, and immensely powerful, offering extraordinary textural volume and density balanced by a laser-like beam of precise natural acidity. The blend consists of 75.4% Sauvignon Blanc and 24.6% Sémillon. Hand-harvested with rigorous selection, the wine is fermented and aged in French oak barrels (around 50% to 70% new) on its fine lees with regular stirring (bâtonnage), yielding an exceptionally long, opulent, and saline finish. The alcohol by volume sits at 14.5%.
Food Pairing
The profound structural concentration, opulent texture, and vibrant acidity of this benchmark white Bordeaux demand world-class culinary pairings. It pairs brilliantly with butter-poached lobster, pan-seared sea scallops with truffle cream, roasted turbot in beurre blanc, and grilled langoustines. It also complements roasted veal sweetbreads, poulet de Bresse with wild moril mushrooms, and aged hard cheeses such as mature Comté or Beaufort.
Vintage Quality
The 2018 growing season in Bordeaux was marked by a wet spring followed by an exceptionally warm, sunny summer. While hot conditions accelerated sugar accumulation, the estate's terroir and meticulous canopy management allowed the white varieties to retain remarkable freshness and aromatic tension before an early harvest. The 2018 Château Haut-Brion Blanc is a monumental, power-packed vintage that combines opulent fruit concentration with exceptional cellar longevity, capable of aging gracefully in proper cellars for 20 to 30+ years.
99 Points - James Suckling
Opulent and perfumed for this great white in 2018, with lemon curd, cooked apple, lilac, lime flower, stone, rock and hints of sandalwood. It's full-bodied yet tight and compressed with layers of fruit that are integrated and focused. It needs time to open and show its true greatness but stunning. Try after 2025.
97 Points - Jeb Dunnuck
A Sauvignon Blanc-dominated release that includes just under 20% Sémillon, the 2018 Château Haut-Brion Blanc reveals a vivid light gold hue and gorgeous notes of crushed limes, white flowers, white grapefruit, and obvious crushed rock-like minerality. These carry a medium to full-bodied white with flawless balance in their fruit, acidity, and alcohol, beautiful mid-palate depth, and an undeniable elegance and purity that's something to behold. It's not a powerful house, but it has a chiselled, elegant, incredibly long style that will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and keep for 20 years or more.
94+ Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The Haut-Brion 2018 Blanc is a blend of 80.6% Sauvignon Blanc and 19.4% Sémillon. This is the highest Sauvignon Blanc in the blend ever. Unsurprisingly, it needs a lot of air at this youthful stage. Eventually, unfurling bit by bit to offer subtle scents of lemon peel, fresh grapefruit, green mango and yuzu, with emerging suggestions of wet pebbles, struck flint, orange blossom and lime leaves with a waft of oyster shells. The medium to full-bodied palate has a gorgeous satiny texture and lovely freshness, offsetting the intense stone and citrusy flavours, finishing long and layered. Give this a good 3-4 years, and drink it over the next 15 years or more. 2024 - 2039.
