Introduction

This red wine originates from France, specifically from the Margaux appellation in the Médoc region of Bordeaux. Château Kirwan is a prestigious Third Growth estate (Troisième Grand Cru Classé) under the 1855 classification. The estate takes its name from Mark Kirwan, an Irishman who settled in Bordeaux in the mid-18th century, though it has been owned and managed by the Schÿler family since 1926. The winery's philosophy balances centuries of tradition with modern innovation, focusing on precise vineyard management and an artistic but disciplined winemaking process to faithfully reflect its unique sandy-gravel terroir.

Wine Description

Chateau Kirwan 2011 presents a deep red colour that has gained complexity and depth with bottle age. The nose is aromatic and expressive, featuring a combination of black fruits, cassis, and cherry layered with sophisticated notes of vanilla, liquorice, and cinnamon. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied and strikingly fleshy, with flavours of deeply ripened black cherry, cocoa, and mocha. It is characterized by its tactile, 'velour-like' texture and smooth, velvety tannins that coat the palate, leading to a fresh and lingering finish with a dry, mineral edge. This blend consists of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 9% Petit Verdot, with an ABV of approximately 13.5%. While the estate follows sustainable practices and is a leader in environmental management, this bottling is not certified organic. The optimal drinking window for this vintage is from 2017 through 2031.
