Product description
Originating from France in the Bordeaux region, specifically within the Pauillac AOC appellation in the Médoc, Château Pontet Canet 2017 represents a biodynamic, iconic, and deeply authentic expression of Left Bank winemaking. Classified as a Fifth Growth in the historic 1855 Classification, Château Pontet Canet has achieved renown for outperforming its classification and operating at First Growth quality levels. Under the visionary stewardship of owner Alfred Tesseron and estate director Jean-Michel Comme, the estate became a pioneer in Pauillac by achieving full organic and biodynamic certifications. Situated adjacent to Château Mouton Rothschild, the vineyard's deep Quaternary gravel soils over a clay-limestone substrate are farmed using horses instead of heavy machinery to preserve soil health. The winemaking philosophy incorporates hand sorting, optical selection, gravity-fed whole-berry optical vatting, and a unique maturation aging program using 50% new French oak barrels, 35% custom-built concrete amphorae (dolia) crafted using soil from the estate vineyard, and 15% second-use barrels for 16 to 18 months. The result is a luminous, pure, and muscular Pauillac that balances deep dark fruit, floral elegance, and gravelly mineral drive.
Wine Description
The wine presents an opaque, deep dark garnet red colour with vibrant violet and crimson reflections along the rim. An expressive, highly complex bouquet opens with noble aromas of ripe wild blackberry, black currant, dark cherry, and cassis compote, interwoven with sophisticated notes of violet, fresh mint, graphite, crushed gravel minerality, espresso bean, dark chocolate, pipe tobacco, and subtle cedar spice. On the palate, it is full bodied, silken, and energetic, delivering concentrated flavours of dark berries, licorice, and savory mineral earth, all supported by a bright, mouthwatering spine of natural acidity. Framed by rich, fine-grained, velvety tannins and an extraordinarily dense, polished mid-palate structure, it concludes with an extraordinarily long, persistent finish marked by lingering black fruit, floral spice, and a clean gravelly mineral grip. Composed predominantly of Cabernet Sauvignon (64%) blended with Merlot (31%), Cabernet Franc (4%), and Petit Verdot (1%), this 2017 release offers an optimal drinking window of 2025–2048+. Stylistically, it effortlessly combines Pauillac power, biodynamic purity, and refined aristocratic structure.
