Product description

Originating from France in the Bordeaux region, specifically within the Médoc AOC appellation, Château Potensac 2016 represents a classic, aristocratic, and long-lived expression of northern Left Bank winemaking. Owned by the Delon family—the esteemed proprietors of Château Léoville Las Cases in Saint-Julien—Château Potensac has long been recognized as the benchmark estate of the northern Médoc, historically classified as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel. Situated on a high gravel mound near Ordonnac, the vineyard parcels benefit from a unique geological terroir comprising ancient Quaternary gravel, limestone subsoils, and clay loam. Under the direct management of Jean-Hubert Delon and the Léoville Las Cases winemaking team, the estate shares the same technical rigor and cellar philosophy as its Saint-Julien sibling: parcel-by-parcel temperature-controlled fermentation in temperature-regulated concrete and stainless steel vats, followed by maturation for 14 to 16 months in French oak barrels (approximately 30% new oak). The result is a refined, structured red wine that delivers the power, mineral precision, and cellaring capability traditionally expected of classified growths.

Wine Description

The wine presents an opaque, deep dark garnet red colour with vibrant ruby and purple reflections along the rim. An expressive, highly complex bouquet opens with noble aromas of ripe black currant, wild blackberry, dark cherry, and cassis compote, interwoven with sophisticated notes of graphite, crushed gravel minerality, dried tobacco leaf, cedar chest, dark chocolate, and subtle toasted oak spice. On the palate, it is medium-to-full bodied, silken, and energetic, delivering concentrated flavours of dark berries, sour plum, and savory mineral earth, all supported by a bright, mouthwatering spine of natural cool-climate Left Bank acidity. Framed by fine-grained, classic Médoc tannins and a taut, well-structured mid-palate, it concludes with a long, persistent finish marked by lingering black fruit, wild herbs, and a clean gravelly mineral grip. Composed predominantly of Merlot (39%), Cabernet Sauvignon (36%), Cabernet Franc (23%), and Petit Verdot (2%), this 2016 release offers an optimal drinking window of 2025–2038+. Stylistically, it combines classic Delon precision, gravelly freshness, and timeless Left Bank elegance.
