This wine originates from Canada, within British Columbia's Okanagan Valley. CheckMate Artisanal Winery was established by Anthony von Mandl on the Golden Mile Bench, dedicated exclusively to crafting world-class Expressions of Chardonnay and Merlot. The winemaking philosophy focuses on minimal intervention, utilizing wild yeast fermentations and precise oak aging to showcase the distinct microclimates and mineral-rich soils of the region's benchlands.
Wine Description
This deep red wine opens with a complex, expressive nose featuring notes of dark plum puree, orange peel, and dark chocolate, complemented by delicate floral undertones and baking spices. On the palate, it is rich, dark, and refined, delivering concentrated flavors of dark cherry, red currant, licorice, and peppercorn. It exhibits a full body with a structured, silky tannic backbone and vibrant natural acidity that leads into a long, vibrant finish. The varietal composition is 100% Merlot. It has an alcohol content of 14.6% ABV and is not certified organic.
Vintage Quality
The 2022 growing season in the Okanagan Valley started with a cool, delayed spring that lowered overall crop yields. Warm late-summer temperatures and ideal harvest conditions allowed the fruit to catch up and reach optimal ripeness, enabling the winemaker to produce a wine with remarkable balance, fresh acidity, and impressive depth.
