Product description

This structured and 'aristocratic' red wine originates from France, within the world-renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape A.O.C. appellation in the Southern Rhône Valley. Domaine Clos des Papes, led by the legendary Paul-Vincent Avril, is widely regarded as one of the ultimate benchmark estates of the region. Sourced from 24 distinct parcels spread across 32 hectares of organically farmed vineyards, the estate benefits from a complex mosaic of terroirs most notably the famous galets roulés (large quartz quartzite stones) over clay, limestone, and sand. The Mediterranean climate, defined by intense solar warmth tempered by the forceful, cooling Mistral wind, enables the diverse grape varieties to achieve full phenolic maturity while preserving remarkable structural balance, fresh vitality, and profound mineral depth.

Wine Description

The 2019 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge presents a deep, luminous garnet-ruby color in the glass with vivid crimson and magenta shimmers at the rim. Its sensory profile is exceptionally fresh, high-toned, and complex, delivering a masterfully precise, layered, and noble portrait of Southern Rhône terroir. The bouquet opens with a soaring display of crushed kirsch, wild blackberries, red plum compote, and black raspberries, seamlessly layered with complex underlays of garrigue (wild lavender, rosemary, and thyme), cured meats, black pepper, star anise, damp earth, crushed limestone, and subtle cedarwood. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, athletic, and precisely focused, showcasing a succulent, power-packed core of dark stone fruits, blood orange zest, and cocoa nibs. It is characterized by its outstanding inner energy and an incisive, mouthwatering backbone of natural acidity that effortlessly lifts its rich mid-palate extract. The mouthfeel is broad, velvety, and linear, framed by firm, fine-grained, and chalky tannins that glide into an extraordinarily long, dry, and savory finish accented by lingering notes of iron, tapenade, and dried herbs.

Vintage Quality

The 2019 growing season in the Southern Rhône is celebrated as a solar, powerful, and remarkably balanced vintage. A warm, dry summer with intense sunshine was tempered by timely late-summer rainfall and the cooling influence of the Mistral wind, allowing grapes to achieve full phenolic skin maturity while retaining bright natural acidity and firm skin tannins. Paul-Vincent Avril harvested pristine, low-yielding fruit with ideal structural parameters. The resulting 2019 Clos des Papes Rouge combines generous warmth and fruit concentration with noble structural restraint, built to evolve and improve gracefully in a cellar over the next 15 to 25+ years.
