Clos du Marquis is a distinguished label created in the early 20th century by the Delon family, proprietors of the revered Château Léoville Las Cases. Situated in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Clos du Marquis has earned its own identity, separate from its famous sibling estate, while benefiting from similarly meticulous winemaking and vineyard management practices.
A blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2022 Clos du Marquis displays a deep garnet hue. The nose opens with complex aromas of cassis, ripe blackberries, graphite, and violets, underpinned by hints of cedar and tobacco. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with firm yet polished tannins, showcasing layers of dark fruit, espresso, and savoury spice. The mid-palate is concentrated and structured, leading to a long, precise finish with a mineral edge.
Food Pairing
Pair this wine with grilled ribeye steak, rosemary-crusted lamb chops, or a rich mushroom risotto. Aged cheeses like Comté or Tomme de Savoie also complement its complexity. This pairing highlights the wine’s depth and character.
96 Points - James Suckling: A scented, fresh and polished Clos du Marquis that shows tension. Medium- to full-bodied, this has blueberries and red berries with attractive minerality. A hint of pencil shavings as well. The tannins are fresh and really chalky and dissolved. 45.5% merlot, 44.5% cabernet sauvignon and 10% cabernet franc. Superb balance makes it pure, almost a bit ethereal and already inviting, but this should be approached after 2028.
97 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:I loved the 2022 Clos Du Marquis, which is a brilliant effort, if not the finest vintage of this cuvée I've tasted. Cassis, graphite, and floral notes all define the bouquet, and it's full-bodied, with ultra-fine tannins and flawless balance. It shows the ripe, concentrated, powerful style of the vintage yet is incredibly pure and seamless, with everything in the right places. It's going to round into form with just a few years of bottle age but have decades of prime drinking.
