Product description
This single-estate artisan French apple brandy originates from the Bocage Ornais region in southern Normandy, crafted by Distillerie Garnier. Founded and operated with a steadfast focus on traditional agricultural methods, the Garnier family oversees estate orchards planted with standard tall-stem (haute-tige) cider apple trees, utilizing unsprayed, sustainably farmed fruit. Distillerie Garnier 6 Year Old Calvados is produced from a carefully measured blend of traditional bittersweet, bitter, acidic, and sweet cider apple varieties harvested from local groves. Following a natural, slow wild-yeast fermentation of pure apple cider, the cider is distilled in a traditional copper column still before resting for a minimum of 6 years in seasoned French oak casks.
Spirit Description
This Calvados pours a bright, warm amber hue with golden-copper reflections and slender, elegant legs along the glass. On the nose, it strikes an enticing equilibrium between crisp orchard vitality and early wood evolution, leading with aromas of caramelized apple slices, tarte tatin, and baked red apples, followed by delicate notes of dried orange peel, vanilla pod, floral apple blossom, and toasted hazelnut. On the palate, an initial rush of juicy stewed orchard fruit, poached pear, and golden raisins unfolds into mid-palate notes of sweet baking spices (cinnamon stick, nutmeg, and a hint of clove), gentle wood tannins, and a crisp, mouthwatering cider acidity. The oak influence adds depth and structure while allowing the fresh apple core to shine. The finish is medium-to-long, clean, and warming, trailing off with impressions of apple compote, roasted walnut, light oak spice, and a dry, refreshing fruit warmth.
Accolades
Distillerie Garnier has earned steady acclaim among European spirits writers, craft spirits competitions, and sommeliers for its transparent, grower-producer philosophy. The 6 Year Old expression is frequently praised as an exemplary benchmark of mid-aged Calvados, showcasing the hallmark character of tall-stem orchard fruit. Critics and judges routinely commend the distillery for preserving an authentic, crisp apple acidity across six years of wood aging, noting that the absence of artificial additives yields a far cleaner, more expressive palate than commercially sweetened mass-market brandies.
