Product description
This benchmark dry red wine originates from France, produced in the legendary Côte-Rôtie appellation of the Northern Rhône Valley. Domaine Jamet, led by Jean-Paul Jamet alongside his wife Corinne and son Loïc, is widely revered as the absolute pinnacle of traditional, masterfully crafted Côte-Rôtie. The family’s flagship cuvée is a blend drawn from over 25 distinct lieux-dits across the appellation (including famous parcels like Côte Brune, Lancement, Chavaroche, and Moutonne), combining both schist-rich soils of the Côte Brune and granite-based soils of the Côte Blonde. Jamet is internationally celebrated for resisting modern trends of heavy oak and destemming, standing as a benchmark for whole-cluster fermentation and pure, site-driven Syrah.
Wine Description
In the glass, the 2021 vintage displays a vibrant, deep ruby-garnet color with crimson highlights. The nose is extraordinarily complex, pungent, and savory, bursting with aromas of black raspberry, wild blueberry, and tart plum, seamlessly fused with signature Northern Rhône notes of smoked bacon fat, tapenade black olives, crushed black pepper, violet flowers, leather, and dried garrigue. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, remarkably focused, and electric with energy. Fine, peppery, persistent tannins support a core of pure dark fruit, framed by a striking beam of natural acidity and a long, granite-laden mineral finish. Crafted almost entirely from 100% Syrah (co-fermented with a tiny splash of Viognier, around 1-2%, when harvested together), Jamet incorporates a high proportion of whole clusters (typically 80-90% or more). Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, followed by roughly 22 months of aging in French oak barrels (using mostly neutral wood, with only 15% new oak). The alcohol by volume sits at a refined 13.0%.
Food Pairing
The intense savory aromatics, fine tannic grip, and elevated natural acidity of this traditional Côte-Rôtie make it an elite partner for high-end game and savory meat dishes. Excellent culinary pairings include roasted pigeon or squab, pan-seared duck breast with a green peppercorn reduction, braised venison loin, roasted rack of lamb with rosemary and garlic, and slow-braised beef short ribs. It also pairs wonderfully with earthy dishes featuring wild mushrooms, truffle pasta, or cured charcuterie like wild boar sausage.
Vintage Quality
The 2021 vintage in the Northern Rhône was a cooler, traditional "vigneron’s vintage" marked by spring frost challenges and lower overall temperatures compared to the warm, high-alcohol years of 2018–2020. This required meticulous hand-sorting, but in the hands of a master like Jean-Paul Jamet, the 2021 turned out as a triumphant return to classic, fresh, and aromatic proportions. The 2021 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie highlights stunning freshness, lower alcohol, and ethereal spice, making it deeply compelling to taste in its youth with proper decanting while possessing the structural integrity to evolve beautifully in the cellar over 15 to 20+ years.

95 Points - Decanter
A tasting of component barrels for this wine made for an instructive view of the vintage. Certain sites show the lightness of the vintage, fresh and peppery. Others, such as Bonnivières and Tartaras, exhibited the rigid, austere tannins that are quite common in 2021. Few barrels had great concentration or generosity of fruit; this is a vintage about structure and minerality rather than concentration or fruit sweetness. I would be inclined to leave this for a substantial amount of time before broaching, around 2031, by which time it should show good complexity and terroir expression, and may well be worthy of a higher score. All whole-bunch fermented, and matured mostly in old demi-muids.

95 Points - Vinous
Inky magenta. Highly expressive aromas of red and blue fruits, violet, incense, olive and baking spices, along with a smoky mineral top note. Stains the palate with vibrant, sharply etched black raspberry, blueberry, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors that slowly deepen and become sweeter with air. Shows very good power but comes off lithe, showing no rough edges on a long, gently tannic finish that leaves behind sappy blue fruit and black pepper notes.
