Product description
This rare Grand Cru dry white wine originates from France, within the prestigious Corton-Charlemagne appellation straddling the Montagne de Corton in the Côte de Beaune subregion of Burgundy. Founded in the late 1920s by Pierre Ramonet, Domaine Ramonet is widely considered one of Burgundy’s most revered producers of Chardonnay, historically anchored in Chassagne-Montrachet. Managed today by Jean-Claude Ramonet, the estate's Corton-Charlemagne cuvée expands their reach to the steep, south-and-southwest-facing limestone slopes of Pernand-Vergelesses and Aloxe-Corton. Grown on high-elevation marl and white Jurassic limestone soils, this wine stands as a monument to power, precision, and monumental aging potential.
Wine Description
In the glass, the 2023 vintage presents a pale, luminous golden color with emerald reflections. The complex and intense nose opens with soaring aromas of white peach, crisp green pear, and Meyer lemon, interwoven with Ramonet’s signature notes of spearmint, crushed flint, gunsmoke, white flowers, and subtle toasted hazelnut. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, dense, and electric, displaying immense structural weight seamlessly balanced by a razor-sharp beam of chalky mineral tension and vibrant acidity. Crafted from 100% Chardonnay, the hand-harvested fruit undergoes gentle pressing and natural fermentation in French oak barrels (approximately 30% to 33% new). The wine is aged on its fine lees for roughly 18 months, resulting in an extraordinarily long, saline, and aristocratically persistent finish. The alcohol by volume sits at 13.5%.
Food Pairing
The profound textural concentration, high mineral intensity, and structural drive of this Grand Cru Chardonnay call for rich, high-end gastronomy. It pairs magnificently with butter-poached lobster, pan-seared sea scallops in black truffle cream, roasted turbot with beurre blanc, and seared langoustines. It also complements rich white meat dishes like roasted poulet de Bresse with wild moril mushrooms, sweetbreads, and aged Burgundian cheeses like mature Comté or Époisses.
Vintage Quality
The 2023 vintage across the Côte de Beaune yielded white wines of exceptional generosity, aromatic purity, and structural balance. A warm summer enabled uniform phenolic maturity without sacrificing natural acidity, particularly on high-altitude, limestone-rich Grand Cru sites like Corton-Charlemagne. The 2023 Domaine Ramonet Corton-Charlemagne is a collector’s dream, combining immediate aromatic charm and muscular volume with the tight mineral backbone required to evolve gracefully in cellars for 15 to 25+ years.
