Product description
Originating from France in the Burgundy region, specifically within the Côte de Nuits Villages AOC appellation, Domaine Joseph Roty Côte de Nuits Villages 'La Croix Violette' represents an authentic, old-vine, and classically structured expression of Pinot Noir. Domaine Joseph Roty is one of the historic, traditional domaines of Gevrey-Chambertin, tracing its family winemaking roots in the Côte de Nuits back to 1710. The estate is celebrated for possessing some of the oldest average vine age in Burgundy. Sourced from the single lieu-dit 'La Croix Violette' situated in the commune of Brochon just north of Fixin and adjacent to Gevrey-Chambertin, the vineyard blocks contain ancient vines planted between 1881 and 1950 in deep clay-limestone soils. Under the direction of Pierre-Jean Roty and the winemaking team, the philosophy adheres strictly to traditional methods: hand harvesting, destemming, cool pre-fermentation maceration, fermentation in cement vats with ambient yeasts, and maturation for 15 to 16 months in French oak barrels (approximately 20% to 30% new oak) without fining or filtration. The result is a concentrated, muscular red Burgundy that punches far above its appellation level with dark fruit richness, savory spice, and ageworthy tension.
Wine Description
The wine presents a clear, luminous medium ruby-garnet colour with vibrant crimson reflections along the rim. An expressive, highly perfumed bouquet opens with noble aromas of ripe dark cherry, wild blackberry, black raspberry, and red currant, interwoven with sophisticated notes of violet blossom, game, forest floor, crushed limestone minerality, and warm French oak cedar spice. On the palate, it is medium bodied, silken, and energetic, delivering concentrated flavours of dark berries, sour plum, and savory mineral earth, all supported by a bright, mouthwatering spine of natural cool-climate acidity. Framed by firm, fine-grained tannins and a dense, well-proportioned mid-palate structure, it concludes with a long, persistent finish marked by lingering red fruit, dried herbs, and a clean gravelly grip. Composed of 100% Pinot Noir, it combines Roty's signature old-vine depth, rustic power, and quintessential Côte de Nuits mineral purity.
