Product description
Originating from France in the Burgundy region, specifically within the Gevrey Chambertin AOC appellation in the Côte de Nuits, Domaine Joseph Roty Gevrey Chambertin 'Cuvée de Clos Prieur Bas' represents an authentic, old-vine, and classically structured expression of village-level Pinot Noir. Domaine Joseph Roty is among the most historic, revered family domaines in Gevrey-Chambertin, tracing continuous wine production back to 1710. Sourced from the lieu-dit 'Clos Prieur Bas'—situated immediately downslope from the premier cru section of Clos Prieur—the vineyard blocks feature venerable old vines planted predominantly in the 1960s on deep, limestone-rich clay soils with exceptional drainage. Under the direction of Pierre-Jean Roty and the winemaking team, the cellar adheres strictly to traditional Burgundian methods: hand harvesting, rigorous sorting, destemming, cool pre-fermentation maceration, ambient yeast fermentation in concrete vats, and maturation for 15 to 16 months in French oak barrels (approximately 30% to 50% new oak) without fining or filtration. The result is a concentrated, velvety red Burgundy that regularly challenges Premier Cru benchmarks in complexity, textural depth, and cellaring power.
Wine Description
The wine presents a clear, luminous medium ruby-garnet colour with vibrant crimson reflections along the rim. An expressive, highly perfumed bouquet opens with noble aromas of ripe dark cherry, wild blackberry, black raspberry, and dark plum compote, interwoven with sophisticated notes of violet blossom, game, forest floor, crushed limestone minerality, and warm French oak spice. On the palate, it is medium-to-full bodied, silken, and energetic, delivering concentrated flavours of dark berries, sour plum, and savoury mineral earth, all supported by a bright, mouthwatering spine of natural cool-climate acidity. Framed by rich, fine-grained tannins and a dense, well-proportioned mid-palate structure, it concludes with a long, persistent finish marked by lingering red fruit, dried herbs, and a clean gravelly grip. Composed of 100% Pinot Noir, it combines Roty's signature old-vine concentration, rustic elegance, and quintessential Gevrey-Chambertin mineral muscle.
