Product description
This structured and 'refined' red wine originates from France, within the world-renowned Gevrey-Chambertin A.O.C. appellation of Burgundy's prestigious Côte de Nuits. While Domaine Michel Gros is historically anchored and most famous for its iconic monopolies in Vosne-Romanée, the family has expanded its mastery to the more muscular northern terroirs of Gevrey-Chambertin. Under the current direction of Pierre Gros, who operates with ready counsel from his legendary father Michel, the estate follows a winemaking philosophy that values classic site transparency, sleek fruit elegance, and long-term structural balance. The "La Platière" cuvée is sourced from a single, distinct vineyard block located on the lower slopes of the appellation, where the vines grow in well-drained, limestone-heavy marls and stony soils that naturally yield a Pinot Noir combining Gevrey’s traditional burliness with the domain’s signature silky finesse.
Wine Description
The 2023 Domaine Michel Gros Gevrey-Chambertin "La Platière" presents a deep, clear ruby-red appearance in the glass. Its sensory profile is wonderfully elegant, complex, and high-toned, opening with an expressive bouquet of ripe black cherries, red raspberries, and wild bramble berries, beautifully layered with fragrant underlays of fresh violets, lilac, sweet spices, and a gently savory, peaty earthiness. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, deep, and precisely focused, showcasing a sappy and succulent core of dark summer fruits and sweet blueberries. It is characterized by its outstanding structural balance, showing excellent freshness and a lively backbone of racy, mineral acidity that highlights its classic regional typicity. The mouthfeel is sleek and satin-smooth on the entry before revealing a fine, muscular grip, driven by powdery, dusty tannins that carry into a long, dusty, and youthfully austere finish accented by toasty French oak barrel spices and a lingering hint of licorice.
This authentic, dry red expression is crafted from 100% Pinot Noir and reached a well-balanced alcohol content (ABV) of 14.0%. The grapes were entirely hand-harvested at optimal physiological maturity in mid-September. In the cellar, the fruit underwent a meticulous sort followed by a gentle, traditional fermentation using native yeasts in temperature-controlled vats to preserve primary fruit intensity. After completing malolactic fermentation, the wine was matured for several months in premium French oak barrels, carefully utilizing a measured proportion of new wood to subtly enhance the structural matrix and add a toasty framework without overshadowing the terroir or raw varietal character of the single plot.
