Product description
This structured and 'aristocratic' red wine originates from France, within the prestigious Pommard Premier Cru A.O.C. appellation in the Côte de Beaune region of Burgundy. Produced by Domaine Parent a historic estate in Pommard founded in 1753 and today expertly steered by sisters Anne and Catherine Parent this single-vineyard bottling represents an exceptional, deeply expressive profile of Premier Cru red Burgundy. Sourced from the historic, east-facing Les Croix Noires vineyard block (situated on gentle, well-draining slopes in the mid-slope heart of the appellation, adjacent to Les Rugiens and Les Chaponnières), the old vines are rooted in deep, iron-rich reddish clay, limestone, and broken gravelly scree. The semi-continental microclimate features generous morning sun exposure balanced by cool hill breezes, allowing Pinot Noir to achieve complete phenolic skin maturity while locking in an age-worthy natural acidity and powerful, structured tannins.
Wine Description
The 2020 Domaine Parent Pommard Les Croix Noires Premier Cru presents a deep, luminous garnet-ruby color in the glass with bright magenta and crimson highlights along the rim. Its sensory profile is exceptionally bold, high-toned, and complex, delivering an expansive, precise, and muscular portrayal of Pommard terroir. The bouquet opens with a soaring display of crushed dark cherries, black raspberries, and ripe damson plums, seamlessly layered with complex underlays of fresh violets, forest floor (sous-bois), pipe tobacco, dark cocoa, game, and a distinct line of iron-rich minerality. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, athletic, and structured, showcasing a succulent core of dark berry compote, blood orange peel, and savory spices. It is characterized by its outstanding inner energy and an incisive, mouthwatering backbone of natural acidity that effortlessly elevates its rich mid-palate fruit density. The mouthfeel is broad, velvety, and linear, framed by firm, muscular, and fine-grained tannins that glide into an extraordinarily long, dry, and mineral-driven finish accented by persistent notes of licorice, black tea, and crushed limestone.
This high-definition Burgundian expression is 100% Pinot Noir, meticulously hand-harvested from low-yielding old vines. Following rigorous cluster sorting, a portion of whole clusters (typically 30% to 50%) was retained during fermentation in open-top wooden vats using indigenous natural yeasts. The winemaking team utilized gentle daily pigeage (punch-downs) and remontage (pump-overs) to extract deep color and noble phenolics. The wine completed full malolactic conversion and was matured sur lie for 16 to 18 months in select French oak barrels (approximately 40% to 50% new wood) before master blending and bottling without fining or filtration. It reaches an effortlessly integrated, food-friendly alcohol content (ABV) of 13.5% to 14.0% and is finished bone-dry.
Vintage Quality
The 2020 growing season in Burgundy was a legendary, solar vintage defined by hot, dry conditions balanced by cool nights that yielded small, concentrated berries with remarkably high natural acidity and dark color phenolics. Domaine Parent's deep-rooted old vines in Les Croix Noires handled the summer drought with ease, producing immaculate fruit at optimal structural balance. Anne and Catherine Parent executed a masterclass in gentle extraction and barrel aging. The resulting 2020 Pommard Les Croix Noires combines monumental depth and rich fruit volume with chiseled tannic drive, built to evolve and improve gracefully in a cellar over the next 15 to 25 years.
