Product description
Dominus Estate, under the stewardship of Christian Moueix, is renowned for producing exceptional Bordeaux-style blends from its historic Napanook Vineyard in Napa Valley. The 2021 vintage stands as a testament to the estate's commitment to excellence, reflecting both the unique terroir and the meticulous winemaking practices employed.
Blend and Production
The 2021 Dominus is composed of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. The growing season was characterized by a dry winter and spring, with total rainfall amounting to 14 inches, less than half the historical average. These conditions led to early hydric stress, promoting the development of small berries with concentrated flavors and phenolic compounds. Harvest took place from September 16 to October 1, 2021.
Tasting Notes
-
Appearance: Opaque purple-black hue.
-
Nose: Intense aromas of freshly crushed blackcurrants, blackberry preserves, and stewed plums, complemented by nuances of violets, licorice, tar, and a hint of cedar.
-
Palate: Full-bodied with a rich, dense texture. The wine reveals a complex interplay of dark fruits, floral notes, and savory elements, supported by firm yet polished tannins. The finish is long and layered, suggesting significant aging potential.
Critical Acclaim
-
Jeb Dunnuck: 100 points – "One of the legendary Dominus, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is unquestionably in the same league as the 2018, 2016, 2015, 2013, 2010, and 1991, and to my mind, wine simply doesn't get any better."
-
The Wine Independent: 100 points – "Full-bodied with super integrated tannins that are wonderfully polished, giving a cashmere texture that is really luxurious to taste at this early stage."
-
James Suckling: 99 points – "The purity of the cabernet fruit is so enticing, with blackcurrant, rose petals, nettles, and subtle graphite."
Serving and Cellaring
While approachable in its youth after decanting, the 2021 Dominus will benefit from extended cellaring. Optimal drinking is anticipated between 2027 and 2050, allowing the wine to develop further complexity and integration.
