Product description
This Grosses Gewächs (Great Growth) Pinot Noir hails from Germany, specifically the Mosel region, from the steep, slate-rich hillsides around the village of Lieser.
The history of the Thanisch family's winemaking tradition is traceable back to 1636. The estate, officially named Weingut Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch – Erben Müller-Burggraef, owes its distinguished name to Dr. Hugo Thanisch, who greatly raised the winery's international profile in the mid-19th century, and his widow (Witwe), who took the helm after his untimely passing. The winery’s philosophy is deeply rooted in sustainability and ecological work, focusing on careful cultivation of low-yield, top-quality grapes to achieve physiological ripeness that guarantees fully mature, complex aromas in the wine.
Wine Description
-
Colour: A bright, translucent garnet with subtle, evolving brown reflections on the rim, indicating a degree of elegant maturity.
-
Aroma: The nose is complex and ripe, offering layers of cherry, wild berries, rose petals, sweet cherry, and a savoury, ethereal mix of sage and juniper berries, complemented by notes of damp earth and underbrush.
-
Palate: The palate is dry and elegant, with finely melted tannins that are powerful yet integrated. Flavours of red and dark fruit carry through, balanced by a distinct balsamic savouriness and a vivid, carrying acidity. The structure is elegant with a deep, persistent length.
-
Body & Finish: Voluminous body, yet retaining freshness and a linear tension. The finish is long, complex, and driven by the interplay of fruit, acid, and fine tannins.
-
Varietal Composition: Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir).
-
Optimal Drinking Window: While mature and expressive now, this wine possesses the structure and acid to evolve beautifully through 2045.
-
Stylistic Notes: This is a profoundly individual and balanced dry German red, achieving an impressive tension between the warmth of the vintage and the cool-climate-driven structure.
-
Organic: Conventional production methods are used, but the winery is committed to sustainable and ecological viticulture.
