Product description
This structured and 'aristocratic' red wine originates from France, within the prestigious Côte-Rôtie A.O.C. appellation in the northern Rhône Valley. Produced by Maison E. Guigal the iconic estate founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal and elevated to international legend by Marcel and Philippe Guigal Château d'Ampuis represents one of the crowning jewels of the northern Rhône. Sourced from seven exceptional historic estate vineyard plots spanning both the Côte Blonde and Côte Brune (including Le Clos, La Garde, La Grande Plantée, La Pommière, Lancement, Les Rochins, and Le Lardin), the vines average over 50 years of age. Planted on dizzyingly steep, terraced slopes rooted in schist, granite, iron-rich limestone, and mica-schist soils, the vines thrive under a continental microclimate. Mediterranean warmth is tempered by cool alpine winds down the Rhône river corridor, allowing Syrah and Viognier to achieve complete phenolic maturity while retaining a chiseled natural acidity and profound mineral drive.
Wine Description
The 2017 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis presents an opaque, deep black-ruby color in the glass with bright violet and garnet reflections along the rim. Its sensory profile is exceptionally bold, high-toned, and complex, delivering an expansive, precise, and authoritative portrayal of roasted slope terroir. The bouquet opens with a soaring display of crushed dark plum, black raspberry compote, and cassis, seamlessly layered with complex underlays of fresh violets, cured bacon fat, cracked black pepper, dark chocolate, espresso bean, pipe tobacco, and a distinct line of smoky iron-ore minerality. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, dense, and athletic, showcasing a succulent core of dark fruits, licorice, blood orange zest, and savory spices. It is characterized by its outstanding inner energy and an incisive, mouthwatering backbone of natural acidity that effortlessly elevates its immense mid-palate density. The mouthfeel is broad, velvety, and linear, framed by firm, muscular, yet fine-grained tannins that glide into an extraordinarily long, dry, and mineral-driven finish accented by persistent notes of tapenade, roasted coffee, and toasted cedar.
This high-definition Rhône expression is a classic assemblage dominated by Syrah and co-fermented with a touch of white Viognier:
Syrah (~95%): Formulates the primary architectural core, contributing dark berry fruit, structural volume, savory spice, black pepper, and iron-stone minerality.
Viognier (~5%): Co-fermented to stabilize color, elevate perfumed floral aromatics (violet and white peach lift), and impart a silky, seamless texture across the mid-palate.
The hand-harvested fruit from steep terraces underwent rigorous sorting followed by long temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel vats with extensive pumping over and cap punch-downs. Following Guigal’s uncompromising tradition, the wine completed malolactic conversion and was matured for an extraordinary 38 months in 100% new French oak barrels crafted in the winery's own cooperage at Château d'Ampuis. It reaches an effortlessly integrated, food-friendly alcohol content (ABV) of 14.0% to 14.5% and is finished bone-dry.
Vintage Quality
The 2017 growing season in the Northern Rhône was a concentrated, solar vintage defined by hot, dry conditions that yielded small berries with intense flavor concentration, deep color, and strong tannic foundations. Guigal’s old vines across the steep terraced slopes of Ampuis handled the heat remarkably well, retaining crucial acidity and structural balance. Philippe Guigal’s masterclass in long, extended barrel aging polished the wine's formidable tannic frame into a seamless masterpiece. The 2017 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis is just entering its initial drinking window and possesses the structural depth to cellar and evolve gracefully over the next 20 to 30 years.
