Product description

El Enemigo Cabernet Franc originates from Argentina, within the Mendoza region and the high-altitude Gualtallary subregion of the Uco Valley. The winery was founded in 2009 by Alejandro Vigil, the chief winemaker at Catena Zapata and a soils engineer, alongside historian Adrianna Catena. Their partnership is built on a shared passion for history and a philosophy of 'irreverence' toward the status quo, aiming to produce wines that confront the 'enemy within' through minimal human intervention. The estate is inspired by traditional European styles, particularly the cool-climate expressions of Bordeaux's Pomerol region.

Wine Description

This red wine presents a deep purple colour with dark intensity and soft violet tones. The sensory profile is complex and layered, featuring an aromatic nose of blackcurrants, ripe plums, and cassis, interwoven with notes of violet, black pepper, and tobacco leaves. On the medium-to-full-bodied palate, it delivers a fresh impact and excellent structure, with flavours of ripe red fruits and hints of eucalyptus and cedar. The wine is characterized by a sturdy, mineral-driven core and firm yet polished tannins, leading to an explosive and persistent finish.

  • Varietal Composition: A blend of 90% Cabernet Franc and 10% Malbec.

  • ABV: Recorded at 13.5%.

  • Organic Status: While the winery utilizes certified sustainable and eco-friendly practices, including spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, this specific wine is not typically certified organic.

  • Stylistic Notes: The wine underwent a 60-day maceration and was aged for 15 to 16 months in a combination of ancient oak foudres, barriques, and concrete tanks to preserve terroir clarity.
