Product description
This finished Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey originates from Bardstown, Kentucky, produced by the family-owned Heaven Hill Distillery. Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel builds upon the legacy of the Reverend Elijah Craig, credited in bourbon lore with pioneering the charred oak aging process. Crafted from Heaven Hill’s traditional bourbon mash bill—78% corn, 10% rye, and 12% malted barley—this release begins with fully matured Elijah Craig Small Batch (aged roughly 8 to 12 years). It then undergoes a secondary finishing period in custom toasted new American oak barrels crafted in partnership with Independent Stave Company. These finishing casks are constructed from 18-month air-dried wood, subjected to a moderate toast level followed by a flash char. Bottled at the brand's classic 94 proof (47.0% ABV) in a 750 ml bottle, it introduces dense wood sugars and confectionery oak complexity to the traditional bourbon profile.
Spirit Description
This bourbon pours a rich, deep mahogany-amber hue with burnished copper highlights and thick, slow-running tears along the glass. On the nose, it is intensely aromatic, decadent, and dessert-like, leading with rich vanilla bean, toasted marshmallow, dark caramel, and molten brown sugar, underlaid by roasted pecans, charred coconut, dark cocoa, and sweet seasoned oak. On the palate, the 94 proof delivery is remarkably creamy, viscous, and full-bodied. An initial wave of sweet milk chocolate, crème brûlée crust, and butterscotch coats the tongue before transitioning into mid-palate notes of toasted graham cracker, campfire smoke, sweet baking spices (cinnamon stick and nutmeg), and polished cedar tannins. The secondary toasted wood adds concentrated sweetness and pastry notes without introducing bitter astringency. The finish is long, warm, and lingering, leaving trailing impressions of charred marshmallow, sweet oak spice, vanilla cream, and lingering dark chocolate.
