Product description
Erdinger Weissbier Dunkel is a dark wheat beer classic from Erdinger Weißbräu, the world’s largest wheat beer brewery located in Erding, Bavaria. Originally created in 1989 as a birthday gift for owner Werner Brombach by his master brewers, it was so exceptionally well-received that it was quickly brought to full production. A textbook example of a traditional Dunkles Weissbier (Dunkelweizen), it marries the signature fruity, top-fermented yeast esters of a classic Bavarian wheat beer with the rich, chocolatey depth of roasted dark malts.
Beer Description
Erdinger Dunkel pours an opulent, cloudy dark chestnut brown with deep ruby highlights, crowned by a massive, towering tan foam head that lingers throughout the glass.
Aroma: The nose is rich, aromatic, and comforting. It opens with dominant notes of dark banana bread, roasted nuts, and chocolate malt, supported by top notes of ripe plum, dried fig, and a gentle whisper of spicy clove.
Palate: On the tongue, it is medium-to-full bodied with a velvety, creamy, and lively effervescence. It leads with a warm wave of caramelized wheat, cocoa, and toasted crust, transitioning into a balanced mid-palate of sweet dark fruit and subtle clove spice. The finish is remarkably smooth, clean, and refreshing, leaving a delicate sweetness lingering alongside roasted malt richness.
Profile: It sits at a traditional 5.3% ABV and a gentle bitterness of approx. 14 IBU, focusing entirely on yeast esters and roasted grain harmony over hop bitterness.
Technical Notes: Erdinger Dunkel is brewed using fine wheat and barley malts, including heavily toasted dark specialty malts that impart its signature ruby-brown color and roasted flavor complexity. It is top-fermented using Erdinger's proprietary house yeast strain. Following primary fermentation, it undergoes the traditional Bayerische Edelreifung (double maturity process), being bottle and keg conditioned with fresh wort to ensure natural carbonation, a thick velvety head, and complex flavor development.
