Product description
Far Niente, established in Oakville in 1885 and restored by Gil and Beth Nickel in 1979, stands as one of Napa Valley's most iconic benchmark producers. Renowned as the "House of Chardonnay," the estate has maintained an uncompromising commitment to producing world-class, house-style Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon for over four decades.
A defining signature of Far Niente Chardonnay is its strict no-malolactic fermentation philosophy. First established with the 1979 vintage, this house style preserves the grape's natural, bright acidity and vibrant fruit character, resulting in a Chardonnay that balances rich, house-style decadence with electric precision and remarkable ageability.
Wine Description
The Far Niente Napa Valley Chardonnay 2023 displays a brilliant pale gold color with green highlights. On the nose, it opens with vibrant aromas of lemon curd, green apple, peach, and citrus blossom, intertwined with underlying notes of toasted brioche, flinty minerality, and subtle vanilla spice.
On the palate, the wine delivers the signature Far Niente contrast: a rich, silky texture paired with clean, mouthwatering acidity. Layers of tropical papaya, crisp pear, and roasted hazelnut unfold across a focused, medium-to-full-bodied frame. The absence of malolactic fermentation keeps the fruit profile pure and bright, preventing any heaviness and carrying the wine into a long, crisp, and elegant finish accented by refined oak spice.
Crafted primarily from estate fruit in Coombsville—complemented by select sites in Carneros and Napa Valley—the wine was fermented and aged for approximately 8–10 months in French oak barrels (roughly 50% new, 50% neutral).
Food Pairing
The bright, non-malolactic acidity combined with rich French oak integration makes this Chardonnay exceptionally versatile at the table. It pairs brilliantly with rich seafood such as pan-seared sea scallops with lemon-butter sauce, butter-poached lobster, crab cakes, and roasted halibut. It is equally adept at complementing roasted chicken with herbs, pork tenderloin with apple reduction, wild mushroom risotto, and creamy cheeses like Delice de Bourgogne, Brie, or Gruyère.
