Product description

This vibrant red wine originates from southern Italy, within the mountainous Irpinia DOC of the Campania region. Feudi di San Gregorio, founded in 1986 in Sorbo Serpico, is a powerhouse estate globally credited with leading the modern renaissance of Campania's indigenous grape varieties.

Aglianico is famously nicknamed "The Barolo of the South" due to its intense, age-worthy tannins and high acidity. However, the "Rubrato" cuvée is deliberately envisioned as a more youthful, accessible, and energetic expression. By steering clear of oak barrels, the winery showcases the grape's bright, wild fruit personality without sacrificing its classic southern complexity.

Wine Description

The Feudi di San Gregorio Rubrato 2022 is an exuberant, fresh, and beautifully balanced red wine that trades heavy wood extraction for pure varietal character and drinkability.

  • Appearance: An intense, brilliant ruby red with clear violet glints at the rim.

  • Nose: Strikingly fragrant and expressive. The bouquet opens with an enticing blend of wild black berries, dark sweet cherries, and crushed raspberries, layered gracefully with complex undertones of licorice, forest floor, walnuts, and a distinctive, cooling balsamic or mentholated finish.

  • Palate: Balanced, dense, and beautifully textured on the palate. The entry is dominated by flavors of sour cherry and wild blueberry flesh, which transition seamlessly into a spicy, savory mid-palate. Thanks to the absence of heavy oak, the tannins are incredibly silky and supple, supported by a vital, refreshing acidity that leaves the palate feeling clean, dry, and thoroughly refreshed.

  • Technical Details: 100% Aglianico. The grapes are sourced from estate parcels characterized by high-altitude volcanic soils in the Irpinia hills. The fruit is hand-harvested and undergoes fermentation and maceration in stainless steel tanks for approximately 2 to 3 weeks. To maintain pure fruit clarity and freshness, the wine is matured for 8 to 10 months completely in stainless steel vats, followed by an additional 6 months of refining in the bottle before release. The alcohol level sits at a well-balanced 13.5% ABV.

Food Pairing

Because of its bright acidity, smooth tannins, and deep dark fruit profile, Rubrato is an elite pairing wine—particularly for traditional southern Italian cuisine. It is a spectacular match for eggplant parmigiana, lasagna, pasta with rich ragù sauce, or Campanian sartù di riso (a baked savory rice dome filled with meat and cheese). Its refreshing finish also allows it to cut cleanly through grilled or roasted white and red meats, and it pairs effortlessly with mature, semi-hard cheeses like Pecorino or Provolone.

Service Tip

To allow the wild berry and sweet licorice aromatics to completely open up, serve this wine at a slightly cool room temperature (between 16°C and 18°C) in a large, wide-bowled red wine glass. While it is drinking beautifully right now, it possesses the structural integrity to cellar and evolve gracefully over the next 4 to 5 years.
