Product description
This structured and 'aristocratic' red wine originates from Italy, within the prestigious Bolgheri D.O.C. appellation on the sun-drenched Tuscan coast. The legendary Gaja family the ultimate masters of Piedmontese Barbaresco ventured south in 1996 when patriarch Angelo Gaja established the Ca'Marcanda estate in Castagneto Carducci. The property's name translates in Piedmontese dialect to the "house of endless negotiations," a humorous nod to the exhausting, years-long meetings required to purchase the land from its previous owners. Operating under a winemaking philosophy that strives for strict "Italian-ity" emphasizing absolute precision, clarity, and minimalist oak masking—this eponymous flagship cuvée represents the absolute quality pinnacle of the estate. The old heritage vines are rooted in a complex terroir matrix split between terre bianche (calcareous white soils rich in limestone, marl, and stones) and terre brune (darker, iron-and-clay-rich deposits), which work together to infuse the international grapes with a distinctly Italian, saline mineral depth.
Wine Description
The 2023 Ca'Marcanda 'Camarcanda' Bolgheri Rosso presents a vibrant, youthful medium ruby-red appearance with bright glints illuminating the rim. Its sensory profile is exceptionally elegant, layered, and high-toned, offering a beautiful departure from hotter, more monolithic years toward a style defined by sheer finesse. The bouquet opens with a captivating display of fresh redcurrants, sour cherries, and crunchy rhubarb, seamlessly woven with complex underlays of liquid violets, juniper berry, sandalwood, and fresh wild herbs. On the palate, the wine is medium-to-full-bodied, harmonious, and remarkably plush, showcasing a juicy, perfectly balanced core of pure red fruit and subtle baking spices. It is characterized by its outstanding inner energy and an even, refreshing backbone of natural acidity that lends underlying tension without ever letting the fruit feel heavy. The mouthfeel is soft, velvety, and seamlessly textured, driven by fine, remarkably well-integrated tannins that carry into a long, precise finish marked by a distinctive, salty volcanic mineral backbone typical of premium Bolgheri maritime clay.
