Product description

This exceptional single-vineyard red wine originates from Italy, specifically from the prestigious Brunello di Montalcino DOCG within the southwest hillsides of the Tuscany region. In 1994, the legendary Piedmontese winemaking family led by Angelo Gaja acquired the historic Pieve Santa Restituta estate, expanding outside their native home for the first time. The 'Rennina' bottling takes its name from the ancient Roman state that once oversaw the site, reflecting an estate philosophy focused on celebrating historical roots and crafting highly structural, elegant expressions of Sangiovese.

Wine Description

The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Rennina presents a dark, jeweled ruby hue in the glass. On the nose, it delivers a complex and fragrant bouquet marked by aromas of red cherries, crushed blackberries, and sweet violets, beautifully intertwined with earthy notes of crushed stones, graphite, dusty sage, and a lift of orange zest. The palate is full bodied, tense, and crisp, driven by an open frame of ripe wild berry fruits, licorice, and aromatic herbs. It reveals magnificent volume and a velvety, polished texture balanced by a racy, bright acidity and a heroic structure of grippy, expansive tannins. The finish is long, intense, and distinctively juicy, trailing off with gamy accents and inner floral notes. Crafted from 100% Sangiovese, the fruit is sourced across three distinct sub-plots—Santo Pietro, Castagno, and Pian dei Cerri—before undergoing fermentation and a long, carefully calibrated oak maturation process. Its noble structure indicates an optimal drinking window between 2028 and 2048.

Vintage Quality

Despite facing early spring frost and a dry summer, the 2021 growing season in Montalcino is considered a triumph, saved by late-season cooling trends that slowed ripening. This allowed the grapes to achieve optimal phenolic maturity and a balanced fruit concentration without excessive alcohol, imbuing the vintage with elegant tannins, high acidity, and a striking, noble structure.
