The wine’s maturation—a full two and a half years—takes place in French oak casks, followed by additional time in concrete vats and a further 18 months in bottle, a period of time that is essential for producing a Giodo Brunello di Montalcino of such elegance, balance, and depth. Tasting it reveals a wine of great breed—complex, deep, intriguing, intense, and velvety, not opulent or excessive, but with extraordinary length.

Tasted at the Giodo estate in one of the most remote and beautiful areas of the appellation, surrounded by forests and sweeping panoramas, the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino gives us a promising taste of what we can expect from this warm vintage. The wine offers ripe but delicate flavours of cassis and dark cherries with nuances of lilac, violets and crushed limestone. The tannins are present and well integrated. Carlo Ferrini's Brunello promises a long ageing period.

The nose brings an umami sanguinity, with notes of tar, petrol and soil, but undertones of black cherries and blackberries make those aromas invigorating rather than harsh. The fruit ripens on the palate, but a slow-developing, spiced earthiness works with deliberate tannins and latent acid to maintain propriety.

Flavours of black cherries, violets, lavender and orange peel follow through to a medium to full body with ultra-fine tannins that run the length of the wine. So focussed and radiant. Agile and weightless on the finish.
