More Information
Product description
This unpeated single malt Scotch whisky originates from Scotland, produced in Rothes within the Speyside region. Distilled at Glenrothes Distillery and bottled by legendary independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail, this release forms part of their color-coded Discovery range—specifically classified under the purple-labeled Sherry Cask profile (alongside Bourbon/Ex-Bourbon green labels and Smoky red labels). Matured for 11 years exclusively in first-fill and refill Oloroso sherry casks, it is bottled at a classic drinking strength of 86 proof (43.0% ABV) without artificial coloring, presenting an accessible, heavily sherried interpretation of Glenrothes' naturally thick, fruit-forward distillate.
Spirit Description
This single malt displays a rich mahogany-amber hue in the glass. On the nose, it is dense, sweet, and comforting, opening with wafts of warm cinnamon rolls, stewed raisins, and dark cherry jam, underlaid by milk chocolate, toasted almonds, and sweet oak. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, velvety, and mouth-coating, delivering an initial hit of sticky dates, orange marmalade, and butterscotch, before developing into baking spices, dark cocoa powder, and charred oak tannins. The finish is long, warm, and pleasantly dry, leaving trailing notes of dried fruits, candied ginger, soft leather, and lingering sherry wood spice. The 43.0% ABV proof offers a smooth, approachable mouthfeel that showcases the rich Oloroso influence without aggressive ethanol heat.
Accolades
The Gordon & MacPhail Discovery Glenrothes 11 Year Old has earned strong praise across independent whisky review outlets like Whiskybase, Dramface, and Words of Whisky. Reviewers frequently celebrate it as one of the best value-for-money sherry-matured Speysiders on the market, noting that Gordon & MacPhail's exceptional cask management often yields a richer, more integrated Oloroso profile than standard distillery-bottled entry levels.
