Product description

This flagship icon red wine originates from Chile, crafted in the prestigious Pirque subregion of the Upper Maipo Valley (Maipo Alto). Situated at the foot of the Andes Mountains, Haras de Pirque is famous for its unique horseshoe-shaped gravity-flow winery and thoroughbred horse breeding history. Originally established as a joint venture between the Matte family and Italy’s legendary Marchesi Antinori, the estate came under full Antinori ownership in 2017. Albis represents the ultimate synthesis of Chilean terroir and Italian winemaking expertise, blending Cabernet Sauvignon with Carmenère grown in high-altitude organic vineyards where cool Andean night breezes preserve natural acidity.

Wine Description

In the glass, Albis 2021 displays an intense, deep ruby color with violet edges. The expressive nose delivers layered aromas of cassis, black cherry, and dark plum, framed by distinct herbal and spicy notes of eucalyptus, mint, graphite, black pepper, and subtle mocha from barrel aging. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, refined, and exceptionally structured. The entry is concentrated yet elegant, showing fine-grained, polished tannins and a vibrant line of freshness that cuts through the rich fruit core. A blend typically led by Cabernet Sauvignon (around 80–85%) and completed by Carmenère (15–20%), the grapes are hand-harvested, optical-sorted, and gravity-fed into French oak vats for fermentation. The wine is aged for approximately 18 to 20 months in French oak barrels (a combination of new and second-use), resulting in a precise, long finish with persistent notes of cocoa and crushed stone. The alcohol by volume sits at 14.5%.

Food Pairing

The firm tannic backbone, savory herbal nuances, and rich dark fruit profile of this Maipo Alto red make it an ideal pairing for structured, rich meat dishes. Excellent culinary partners include prime ribeye steak, grilled rack of lamb with rosemary, roasted venison loin, or slow-braised beef short ribs. It also harmonizes beautifully with empanadas de pino, duck breast with dark fruit reduction, or mature cheeses such as Gouda, sharp Cheddar, and aged Manchego.

Vintage Quality

The 2021 vintage in the Maipo Valley was outstanding, characterized by a cool spring followed by a steady, moderate summer without extreme heatwaves. These conditions allowed for prolonged, uniform ripening, preserving elevated natural acidity, aromatic complexity, and vibrant fresh fruit flavors while permitting tannins to mature fully. The 2021 Albis is considered an exceptionally balanced and age-worthy expression of the estate, displaying remarkable elegance upon release and holding the potential to cellar beautifully for 10 to 15+ years.
