Originating from Australia in the Victoria region, specifically within the Yarra Valley GI appellation, Innocent Bystander Chardonnay represents a fresh, textured, and modern expression of cool-climate Australian white winemaking. Founded in 2003, Innocent Bystander is celebrated for producing vibrant, varietally pure wines that showcase the distinctive microclimates and gravelly loam soils of Victoria's Yarra Valley. Under head winemaker Geoff Alexander and the winemaking team, the philosophy emphasizes gentle whole-bunch pressing, wild yeast fermentation in a combination of temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and French oak puncheons (approximately 15% to 20% new), followed by partial malolactic fermentation and seven months of maturation on fine lees with regular stirring (bâtonnage). The result is a refined, aromatic Chardonnay that balances ripe citrus fruit generosity, subtle creamy oak texture, and electric cool-climate acidity.

Wine Description

The wine presents a brilliant, clear light straw yellow colour with pale greenish-gold highlights along the rim. An expressive, highly perfumed bouquet opens with noble aromas of white peach, nectarine, lemon curd, and crisp green apple, interwoven with subtle notes of white jasmine, roasted cashew, flinty minerality, and subtle toasted oak spice. On the palate, it is medium bodied, silken, and energetic, delivering concentrated flavours of stone fruit, citrus zest, and chalky mineral earth, all supported by a bright, mouthwatering spine of natural cool-climate acidity. Framed by a textured, subtly creamy mid-palate structure and seamless oak integration, it concludes with a long, persistent finish marked by lingering grapefruit, subtle nougat, and a clean mineral grip. Composed of 100% Chardonnay, it offers immediate drinking appeal along with short-term cellaring potential over 3 to 5 years.
