Product description

Originating from Australia in the Victoria region, specifically within the Yarra Valley GI appellation, Innocent Bystander Pinot Noir represents a fresh, highly expressive, and modern expression of cool-climate Australian winemaking. Established in 2003, Innocent Bystander is celebrated for crafting approachable, varietally pure wines that capture the distinct microclimates of Victoria's Yarra Valley. The grapes are sourced from cool-climate, high-elevation vineyard sites where gravelly loam and alluvial clay soils provide optimal drainage. Under head winemaker Geoff Alexander and the winemaking team, the philosophy incorporates gentle de-stemming, 100% whole berry inclusion, small open-vat ambient yeast fermentation, and short maturation on fine lees in seasoned French oak barriques and puncheons (100% older oak) for 9 to 10 months. The result is a vibrant, aromatic Pinot Noir that balances bright Yarra Valley fruit generosity, delicate floral spice, and effortless food friendliness.

Wine Description

The wine presents a clear, luminous pale ruby red colour with soft cherry highlights along the rim. An expressive, highly perfumed bouquet opens with noble aromas of wild strawberry, ripe red cherry, red currant, and fresh cranberry, interwoven with subtle notes of orange peel, dried rose petal, subtle forest floor, and toasted cedar spice. On the palate, it is light-to-medium bodied, silken, and energetic, delivering concentrated flavours of fresh red berries, dark plum curd, and chalky mineral earth, all supported by a bright, mouthwatering spine of natural cool-climate acidity. Framed by smooth, fine-grained tannins and a sleek, supple mid-palate structure, it concludes with a long, persistent finish marked by lingering red fruit, subtle savory spice, and a clean mineral grip. Composed of 100% Pinot Noir, it offers immediate drinking appeal along with short-term cellaring potential over 3 to 5 years. Stylistically, it combines Yarra Valley elegance, vibrant whole-berry aromatics, and versatile food friendliness.
