Product description
This ultra-rare single-cask Cognac originates from the premier cru of Charente, France, bottled under Maison Jean-Luc Pasquet's prestigious Trésors de Famille ("Family Treasures") series. This series highlights exceptional, forgotten casks sourced directly from neighboring smallholder grape growers in the Grande Champagne region. "Le Cognac de Joël" is a single-distiller selection crafted by local grower Joël in the village of Malaville. Composed of eaux-de-vie distilled during the 1988 and 1982 harvests (Lot 88/82), the spirit matured undisturbed in French oak casks for over 30 years before being hand-bottled at a natural cask strength of 98.4 proof (49.2% ABV) in the series' signature 500 ml format. Bottled un-chillfiltered, with zero additives, sugar, or caramel coloring (boisé), it offers an unvarnished snapshot of micro-terroir Grande Champagne distillation.
Spirit Description
This rare Cognac presents a deep amber-mahogany hue with radiant topaz highlights and thick, slow-creeping legs in the glass. On the nose, it is immensely aromatic, rich, and mature, opening with concentrated wafts of dried figs, orange marmalade, candied apricot, and yellow plum, rapidly giving way to classic 30-year rancio notes of polished mahogany wood, pipe tobacco, antique leather, toasted pecans, and espresso bean. On the palate, the natural 49.2% ABV strength delivers a full-bodied, oily, and intensely structured mouthfeel, flooding the palate with dark caramel, dark chocolate, and candied citrus peel before shifting into mid-palate layers of nutmeg, clove, integrated oak tannins, and chalky mineral drive. The finish is exceptionally long, warm, and drying, leaving lingering trailing impressions of sweet tobacco, cacao nibs, toasted walnuts, and a soft spice.
Accolades
Pasquet's Trésors de Famille releases are widely celebrated by Cognac collectors, master sommeliers, and spirits journalists (frequently earning 90+ point accolades from outlets like WhiskyFun and Distiller). Reviewers consistently praise Amy and Jean Pasquet for their role as independent negociants, shedding light on hyper-local smallholders like Joël. Critics emphasize how bottling these old casks at natural cask strength (49.2% ABV) without dilution or sugar filtration showcases a level of density, texture, and aromatic clarity rarely encountered in commercial XO Cognacs.
