Product description
This heavily peated single malt Scotch whisky originates from Scotland, handcrafted on the rugged western coast of Islay at Kilchoman Distillery. Founded in 2005 as Islay’s first new distillery in 124 years, Kilchoman operates as a true traditional farm distillery. Named in honor of the historical Rockside Farm—where the distillery is situated and where a portion of their barley is grown, harvested, and floor-malted on site—this release celebrates Kilchoman’s signature farm-to-glass philosophy. Crafted using heavy Islay peat smoke (50 PPM), the spirit is aged in a combination of first-fill American oak ex-bourbon barrels and Spanish Oloroso sherry casks before being bottled non-chill filtered and natural in color at 92 proof (46.0% ABV).
Spirit Description
This single malt displays a bright pale straw to light amber hue with clean clarity in the glass. On the nose, it is bold, maritime, and intensely aromatic, opening with vibrant wafts of medicinal peat smoke, bonfire ash, and damp coastal moss, quickly revealing sweet lemon oil, green apple peel, vanilla sponge cake, and a touch of brine. On the palate, it feels oily, lively, and medium-bodied, delivering an initial rush of sweet malt, honeyed citrus, and tropical fruits (pineapple and lime), which rapidly transitions into a dense mid-palate of earthy peat smoke, cracked black pepper, and charred oak wood. The finish is long, warm, and lingeringly smoky, leaving trailing impressions of ash, salted caramel, citrus zest, and a persistent coastal peat heat.
Accolades
Kilchoman releases—including those honoring Rockside Farm—hold an elite reputation among Islay whisky enthusiasts and spirits purists. Earning top scores on independent platforms like Whiskybase, Distiller, and Whisky Advocate, critics consistently praise Kilchoman for its expressive farm-distillery character. Reviewers highlight how their 46% ABV bottling strength and reliance on top-tier ex-bourbon casks allow the vibrant, ester-rich citrus profile and pungent Islay peat smoke to sing in perfect harmony without heavy wood over-extraction.
