The King's Ginger Liqueur is a historic English spirit produced by Berry Bros. & Rudd, Britain's oldest wine and spirit merchant. It was originally formulated in 1903 at the request of King Edward VII's physician, who sought a 'fortifying beverage' to warm and revivify the monarch during cold morning rides in his horseless carriage. After being exclusive to the Royal Family and aristocracy for over a century, a standardized version was made available to the public in 2011. While production was briefly based in Holland, it was moved back to the United Kingdom in 2020 following a significant relaunch and reformulation.
Spirit Description
The modern iteration of the liqueur blends pot distilled ginger and lemon oil with a single malt Scotch whisky finish.
Colour: The spirit presents a rich, golden appearance.
Aroma: A pronounced wave of fresh natural ginger leads the bouquet, followed by crystallized ginger sweetness and a faint aura of zesty lemon peel.
Palate: The entry is characterized by a ginger syrup sweetness that gives way to a mellow, rounded mid palate featuring honey notes and a tingle of fresh ginger root.
Body: It possesses an unexpected weight for its proof, supported by a subtle malty undertone from the Scotch whisky.
Finish: The exit is long, spicy, and warming, with lingering ginger heat and a citrus brightness that fades slowly.
ABV: The liqueur was reformulated in 2020 to 29.9% ABV, reduced from its previous strength of 41%.
