Product description
Kistler Chardonnay Carneros Hyde Vineyard originates from the United States, within the California region and the Carneros subregion. Kistler Vineyards has been crafting this highly coveted, site specific bottling since 1994. The winemaking philosophy emphasizes the distinct character of the famous Hyde Vineyard, situated in the heart of Carneros, where vines are rooted in a marine loam soil set that grows leaner as the block travels up the hillside slopes.
Wine Description
This white wine presents a green tinged, pale yellow appearance with excellent clarity and possesses a medium to full, perfectly balanced body. The sensory profile is highly elegant, multi layered, and exotic, opening with a focused nose of ripe orchard fruit, apricot, flint, and lemon zest, seamlessly layered with subtle scents of white pepper, beeswax, and roasted grains. On the silky and viscous palate, it delivers powerful concentrations of fresh golden apples, citrus fruits, honey, and apricot tart, beautifully integrated with hints of savory spices, butterscotch, and toasted bread. The finish is exceptionally long, racy, and persistent, driven by a firm natural acid spine and a poignant, saline marine tone of crushed oyster shells.
Varietal Composition: 100% Chardonnay.
Stylistic Notes: The wine is celebrated for its remarkable structural poise, tension, and texture, presenting a beautifully framed phenolics profile that brings great depth and old world aromatic class without ever feeling heavy.
ABV: Typically recorded between 14.1% and 14.2%.
Organic Status: While the winery employs meticulous, manual estate vineyard monitoring to showcase the pure transparency of the block, this commercial release is not certified organic.
Food Pairing
The vibrant acidity, sleek mineral core, and deeply concentrated texture of this premium Chardonnay make it a versatile partner for rich seafood and savory courses.
Seafood: Pairs phenomenally well with fatty pan seared salmon fillets with lemon dill sauce, grilled lobster, or a traditional western clam, leek, and bacon chowder.
Poultry & Meats: Complements elegant meat dishes such as poulet de Bresse with truffles, roasted stuffed pork loin, or seasoned pork chops finished with cheese.
Savoury: Suggested pairings include rich wild mushroom risotto, which balances the wine's natural butter, spice, and flint notes.
James Suckling: 100 Points
A brilliantly fresh and balanced wine with a marked mineral streak that only adds to its distinctive personality. Aromas of flint, white pepper and lemon zest lead to subtle lemon, lime, chalk, sea breeze, saline and grilled apple flavors. It's a unique interpretation of the famous Hyde Vineyard that keeps you coming back for more. Drink now or hold.
Wine Spectator: 97 Points
This remarkable wine leaps out of the glass with its complexity. Offers cardamom cake, grilled pineapple, peach preserves and apple pastry, plus a note of papaya that’s fleshy and juicy. The fresh thread of acidity is complemented by a mineral streak of crushed rock, lemon salt, white pepper, lemon balm and toasted sesame seed. There’s plenty of momentum on the long, expressive finish.
