Product description
Kistler Chardonnay "Les Noisetiers" 2023 is a highly sophisticated, benchmark white wine from the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County, California.
Founded in 1978, Kistler Vineyards is celebrated for its Burgundian approach to California fruit, relying on a proprietary heritage Chardonnay clone imported from Burgundy in the early 20th century. This specialized clone produces low yields and small berries with high natural acidity and immense flavor concentration. The "Les Noisetiers" bottling (named after the French word for hazelnuts) serves as the winery's iconic regional blend, meticulously combining fruit from prized estate vineyards—including Vine Hill, Dutton Ranch, and Trenton Roadhouse.
Wine Description
The 2023 vintage presents a beautiful pale gold color with bright green reflections. While Les Noisetiers is historically famous for its toasted hazelnut and almond signature, the 2023 vintage pivots toward an incredibly vibrant, citrus-driven, and floral-forward profile.
Aromas: The nose opens with lifted notes of lemon confit, tangerine oil, honeysuckle, and wet stone, with the classic nutty and buttery vanilla notes remaining more subtle and integrated in the background.
Palate: Full-bodied yet beautifully refined, the palate balances a juicy core of stone and tropical fruits—such as peach, apricot, pear, and pineapple—with a powerful streak of coastal acidity.
Finish: It concludes with an understated, resonant, and remarkably long finish marked by saline precision and a light chalky texture.
The wine is crafted from 100% Chardonnay grown in sandy Goldridge soils, which naturally impart finesse and mineral tension to the fruit. The grapes are harvested by hand in the cool of the night and whole-cluster pressed before undergoing barrel fermentation using indigenous yeasts. The wine is aged for 10 months on its fine lees in French oak cooperage and is bottled unfined and unfiltered to preserve its structural integrity. It features an ABV of 14.3%.
Food Pairing
The striking combination of rich fruit weight and high, linear acidity makes this Chardonnay incredibly food-friendly:
Seafood: Outstanding with rich seafood, particularly grilled lobster with tarragon butter, garlic prawns, or seared scallops.
Poultry: Pairs beautifully with traditional roasted chicken with lemon and thyme or an elegant stuffed chicken breast.
Cheese: A spectacular match for nutty, aged hard cheeses like Comté or Gruyrère, which complement the wine's subtle lees character.
Vintage Quality
The 2023 vintage in Sonoma County is being lauded by winemakers as one of the finest in recent memory for site differentiation and cool-climate precision. A long, unusually cool growing season provided an extended "hang time" for the grapes. This allowed the fruit to develop deep, concentrated flavors gradually without experiencing the sudden drops in acidity or spikes in sugar that can occur during late-summer heatwaves. The resulting 2023 Chardonnays are characterized by a spectacular balance of crystalline acidity, moderate alcohol, and elegant restraint. It is highly enjoyable now but will continue to evolve beautifully in the cellar over the next 5 to 10 years.
