Product description
This structured and 'aristocratic' white wine originates from the United States, within the prestigious Sonoma Coast A.O.C. appellation in Northern California. Produced by Kistler Vineyards—a benchmark estate founded in 1978 and universally celebrated as one of California's iconic pioneers of terroir-driven, Burgundian-style Chardonnay—"Les Noisetiers" represents the winery's masterfully assembled coastal expression. Sourced from native heritage clones planted across cool-climate estate plots in the Western Sonoma Coast, Russian River Valley, and Carneros, the vines thrive in well-draining Goldridge yellow apple-wood soils, gravelly loam, and eroded marine sandstones. The maritime microclimate features intense coastal morning fog and afternoon Pacific breezes, allowing Chardonnay grapes to undergo extended hang time, building intense phenolic flavor and aromatic complexity while preserving a razor-sharp, mouthwatering natural acidity and chiseled mineral drive.
Wine Description
The 2024 Kistler Chardonnay 'Les Noisetiers' presents a luminous, pale straw-gold color in the glass with bright platinum and subtle chartreuse reflections along the rim. Its sensory profile is exceptionally fresh, high-toned, and complex, delivering an expansive, precise, and sophisticated portrait of coastal California Chardonnay. The bouquet opens with a soaring display of sliced fresh green apples, Anjou pears, lemon curd, and white peach, seamlessly layered with complex underlays of roasted hazelnuts (from which the cuvée derives its name), white flowers, wet stone, lemon verbena, and a distinct line of crushed chalk minerality balanced by faint toasted brioche. On the palate, the wine is medium-to-full-bodied, sleek, and athletic, showcasing a succulent core of tart orchard fruit, citrus peel, and salted melon. It is characterized by its outstanding inner energy and an incisive, mouthwatering backbone of natural acidity that cuts cleanly across the mid-palate density. The mouthfeel is broad, weightless, and silky, framed by a tactile, creamy texture gained from traditional lees contact that carries into an extraordinarily long, bone-dry, and mineral-driven finish accented by persistent notes of hazelnut, lemon oil, and crushed sea salt.
This high-definition Sonoma expression is 100% Chardonnay, hand-harvested meticulously at night to preserve natural acidity and pure fruit precursors. Following gentle whole-cluster pressing, the unclarified juice was transferred directly into barrels for primary fermentation using indigenous wild yeasts. Embracing classical Burgundian techniques, the wine underwent full malolactic conversion in barrel alongside regular, gentle lees stirring (bâtonnage). It matured for 11 to 12 months in select French oak barrels (approximately 25% to 30% new wood, crafted exclusively by Francois Frères) before master blending and bottling without aggressive fining or filtration. It reaches an effortlessly integrated, food-friendly alcohol content (ABV) of 13.5% to 14.1% and is finished bone-dry.
Vintage Quality
The 2024 growing season along the Sonoma Coast was exceptional, defined by moderate summer temperatures, steady maritime fog patterns, and cool harvest conditions that allowed grapes to ripen slowly with pristine acid balance and full phenolic maturity. Kistler's legendary focus on wild-yeast fermentation and barrel aging on the fine lees captures the pure essence of the vintage. The 2024 Kistler Chardonnay 'Les Noisetiers' offers immediate, high-energy drinking pleasure upon release and possesses the structural frame to evolve gracefully in a cellar over the next 8 to 12 years.
