Product description

Kokanee is the quintessential "Glacier Fresh" lager of Western Canada. Launched in 1959 by the Columbia Brewery in Creston, British Columbia, it was named after the Kokanee Glacier that overlooks the Kootenay region. Known affectionately by locals as the "Sasquatch beer" due to its legendary advertising campaigns, Kokanee is a North American Pale Lager that leans heavily into mountain lifestyle culture. It is designed to be the ultimate crisp, thirst-quenching reward after a day on the slopes or by the lake engineered for maximum drinkability while retaining a distinct, smooth profile that sets it apart from its domestic macro-competitors.

Beer Description

Kokanee pours a brilliant, crystal-clear golden-straw color with an active, fast-rising stream of carbonation and a frothy white head that dissipates cleanly into a light collar.

Aroma: The nose is clean, light, and gently sweet. It leads with dominant notes of sweet corn husks and pale malted grain, followed by a faint, herbal whisper of Pacific Northwest hops. It has a notably fresh, "dewy" aroma with zero heavy yeast attributes or fruity esters.

Palate: On the tongue, it is light-bodied with a brisk, snappy, and highly refreshing mouthfeel. It leads with a distinct flash of bready cracker sweetness, which is quickly balanced by an ultra-low, smooth bitterness. The finish is remarkably clean and brief, vanishing from the tongue with a crisp, mineral-like dryness that mimics cold mountain water.

Profile: It sits at a standard, sessionable 5.0% ABV and a very mild bitterness of approx. 10–13 IBU, prioritizing smooth drinkability over hop intensity.

Technical Notes: The hallmark smoothness of Kokanee is achieved by brewing with a blend of malted barley and cereal adjuncts (such as corn) to lighten the body and crisp up the finish. Crucially, the brewery utilizes a blend of three different hop varieties harvested from the Pacific Northwest, adding just enough structural balance to cut through the malt sweetness without leaving a lingering bitter bite. The beer undergoes cold-filtration to ensure its signature clarity and pristine, unblemished flavor profile.
