Product description
This structured and 'aristocratic' fortified wine originates from Portugal, within the historic Douro D.O.C. appellation. Founded in 1638 by Nicolau Kopke, C.N. Kopke is universally recognized as the oldest Port house in existence and the undisputed benchmark master of single-harvest tawny Ports (Colheita). Sourced from steep, terraced, schist-laden vineyards in the Cima Corgo sub-region where ancient vines are carved into rugged hillsides along the Douro River the grapes are rooted in nutrient-poor, rocky schist subsoils. The region's extreme continental climate features scorching, sun-drenched summers and freezing winters, forcing vine roots deep into rock fissures to absorb water and minerals. This harsh environment yields low quantities of highly concentrated fruit with intense phenolic depth and a remarkably resilient, age-worthy natural acidity.
Wine Description
The 1978 Kopke Colheita Port presents a deep, luminous amber-mahogany hue in the glass with shimmering topaz and greenish-olive reflections along the rim. Its sensory profile is exceptionally bold, high-toned, and complex, delivering an opulent, intricate, and deeply expansive portrait of long-matured single-harvest Tawny Port. The bouquet opens with a soaring, multi-layered display of dried figs, medjool dates, toasted walnuts, and orange marmalade, seamlessly integrated with complex underlays of pipe tobacco, mahogany wood, clear honey, butterscotch, dried apricots, crushed clove, cardamom, and a subtle line of saline minerality. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, viscous, and precisely focused, showcasing a succulent, mouth-coating core of liquid caramel, dark chocolate, and candied citrus peel. It is characterized by its outstanding inner energy and an incisive, mouthwatering backbone of natural acidity that effortlessly cuts through its residual sweetness and mid-palate density. The mouthfeel is broad, velvety, and weightless, carrying into an extraordinarily long, dry-edged, and lingering finish accented by notes of roasted coffee, toasted almonds, and polished wood.
Vintage Quality
The 1978 vintage in the Douro Valley produced small quantities of exceptionally balanced, concentrated grapes characterized by high sugar levels and vibrant natural acidity. While not widely declared as a general Vintage Port year, it proved to be a magnificent, legendary year for Tawny Ports destined for long cask aging. Kopke selected its finest casks from 1978 for long-term cellaring. The resulting 1978 Colheita Port balances decades of cask-matured walnut and wood-spice complexity with a lively structural frame, drinking magnificently today and holding indefinitely in the bottle.
