Product description

This structured and 'crystalline' red wine originates from the United States, within the cool-climate Santa Lucia Highlands A.V.A. of Monterey County, California. Produced by Kosta Browne a benchmark luxury producer founded in 1997 and led by Winemaker Julien Howsepian the Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir forms a cornerstone of the estate's highly coveted Appellation Series. Sourced from legendary single-vineyard sites including Pisoni, Garys', Rosella's, Sierra Mar, and Soberanes, the vines are rooted in Arroyo Seco and Chualar fine sandy loam soils. Positioned along the eastern slopes of the Santa Lucia Mountains, the vineyards are swept daily by cool fog and marine winds drawn from the deep submarine canyon of Monterey Bay. This constant airflow creates a long, gradual growing season, allowing Pinot Noir to achieve intense phenolic depth, rich fruit concentration, and crisp natural acidity.

Wine Description

The 2023 Kosta Browne Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir presents a luminous, deep ruby color in the glass with bright magenta shimmers at the rim. Its sensory profile is exceptionally fresh, high-toned, and complex, delivering an expressive, layered, and precisely focused expression of coastal Monterey terroir. The bouquet opens with a soaring display of wild strawberries, fresh red cherries, and cranberries, seamlessly layered with complex underlays of rose petals, fresh blueberry, sweet baking spices, tea leaf, and a line of crushed stone minerality. On the palate, the wine is medium-to-full-bodied, sleek, and athletic, showcasing a vibrant, succulent core of pomegranate, dark cherry reduction, and blood orange zest. It is characterized by its outstanding inner energy and an incisive, mouthwatering backbone of natural acidity that cuts cleanly through the mid-palate fruit extract. The mouthfeel is broad, silky, and supple, framed by fine-grained tannins and a savory mid-palate that glide into an extraordinarily long, dry, and graceful finish accented by lingering notes of spice and dark forest floor.

Vintage Quality

The 2023 growing season in Monterey County and the Santa Lucia Highlands was a cool, extended vintage characterized by mild summer temperatures and persistent daily marine fog from Monterey Bay. These temperate conditions allowed Pinot Noir grapes to undergo slow, extended phenolic maturation, accumulating deep flavor complexity and skin color while locking in crisp natural malic acidity. Kosta Browne harvested pristine, healthy fruit at peak physiological balance. The resulting 2023 Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir balances generous California fruit purity with a laser-focused structural frame, built to drink delightfully upon release and cellar gracefully over the next 8 to 12 years.
