Product description

This expressive red wine originates from Argentina, specifically from the Paraje Altamira district within the La Consulta region of the Uco Valley in Mendoza. The highly regarded La Posta Pizzella Malbec was created by wine pioneer Laura Catena in collaboration with esteemed winemaker Luis Reginato to celebrate the local small-family growers who serve as the true backbone of the Mendoza wine industry. The wine takes its name from Paula and Pablo Pizzella, two former physical education teachers who moved from Buenos Aires to Mendoza in 2000 to passionately cultivate a meticulous, high-altitude 10-hectare vineyard focused on generating ultimate uniformity and varietal balance.

Wine Description

  • Colour: Beautiful and intense red and purple color in the glass.

  • Aroma: A fragrant and buoyant nose displaying vibrant aromas of black cherries, dark fruits, raspberries, dark chocolate, and warm baker's spice, accented by lovely floral and smoky tones.

  • Palate: Elegant, nuanced, and generously textured on the palate, presenting dense, rich flavors of dark berries, elderberries, mulberries, and ripe plum.

  • Body: Full-bodied and well-structured with round, velvety tannins that frame the fruit profile beautifully.

  • Finish: A solid, sturdy, and lingering finish driven by a mineral focus and a distinct hint of violets.

  • Varietal Composition: 100% Malbec sourced entirely from the Pizzella family's single vineyard situated at an average elevation of 3,600 feet, where the vines average 23 to 25 years of age.

  • Stylistic Notes: The vineyard thrives on a soil base of sandy loam, sand, silt, and clay mixed with 20% stones covered by limestone. To achieve a perfectly balanced profile, the wine is typically aged for 8 to 10 months, with 50% resting in French oak barrels (10% new, 40% second and third use) and the remaining 50% held in stainless steel tanks.

  • Alcohol by Volume: 13.5%

  • Organic Status: Not certified organic, though the grapes are sustainably farmed with a deep love and respect for nature.

Food Pairing

  • Rich meat dishes, open-flame backyard barbecues, and smoky ribs.

  • Premium cuts of beef tenderloin, prime rib, or grilled lamb cutlets.

  • Hearty vegetarian alternatives such as a wild mushroom risotto or grilled polenta topped with a mushroom ragout.

Vintage Quality

Recent vintages from the Uco Valley have showcased remarkable character and consistency, driven by the unique high-altitude conditions of Paraje Altamira. The 2023 growing season was slightly warmer with higher-than-average summer rainfall that helped cool down the air, avoiding extreme heat spikes and ensuring ideal natural acid retention and uniform ripening. Subsequent releases like the 2024 vintage have continued this standard of excellence, earning high praise for their spice-driven aromatics, structural elegance, and precise, mineral-forward finish.
