Product description

Originating from Canada in the Ontario region, specifically within the Niagara Peninsula VQA appellation, Leaning Post Merlot Cabernet Franc represents an artisanal, low-intervention, and cool-climate expression of Niagara red winemaking. Founded by husband-and-wife team Ilya and Nadia Senchuk, Leaning Post is an acclaimed boutique producer dedicated to expressing the distinct terroirs of the Niagara Benchlands and Lincoln Lakeshore sub-appellations. Sourced from select vineyard blocks planted on deep clay loam and limestone-rich soils, the vines benefit from the moderating climatic influence of Lake Ontario and the nearby Niagara Escarpment. Under the direction of winemaker Ilya Senchuk, the winemaking philosophy emphasizes small-batch wild yeast fermentation, gentle hand-plunging of the cap, minimal intervention, and un-fined, un-filtered maturation for 16 to 18 months in neutral and second-use French oak barrels. The result is an authentic, structured red wine that marries dark plum fruit richness, herbal cabernet franc freshness, and distinct Niagara earthiness.

Wine Description

The wine presents a clear, luminous deep ruby red colour with soft crimson reflections along the rim. An expressive, highly perfumed bouquet opens with noble aromas of ripe dark cherry, wild blackberry, black plum, and cassis, interwoven with subtle notes of fresh raspberry, tobacco leaf, dried sage, crushed limestone minerality, and warm cedar oak spice. On the palate, it is medium bodied, silken, and energetic, delivering concentrated flavours of red and dark berries, savory plum curd, and mineral earth, all supported by a bright, mouthwatering spine of natural cool-climate acidity. Framed by smooth, fine-grained tannins and a supple, well-balanced mid-palate structure, it concludes with a long, persistent finish marked by lingering red fruit, dried herbs, and a clean gravelly grip. Composed of a masterfully proportioned blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, it combines Niagara coolness, low-intervention purity, and food-friendly elegance.
