Introduction
The Macallan 12 Year Old Double Cask is a single malt Scotch whisky from Scotland, specifically from the Speyside region. The Macallan distillery was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, initially operating as the Elchie's distillery on the pre-existing Macallan farm buildings. Roderick Kemp brought much-needed stability to the distillery when he took control in 1892, and his family retained ownership for over a century. The distillery is currently owned by the Edrington Group.
Spirit Description
The whisky has a colour described as 'Harvest Sun'. The aroma offers creamy butterscotch, hints of toffee apple, candied orange, vanilla custard, and newly felled oak. Notes of fudge with candied orange and lemon, alongside vanilla and soft spice are also present on the nose. On the palate, it is described as deliciously honeyed, with wood spices such as ginger and nutmeg, citrus, caramel, raisins, and resinous notes. It has a creamy mouthfeel with flavours of marmalade and baking spices. The finish is medium to long, with a sweet and drying quality as oak lingers. This single malt is known for its perfect balance, which is achieved by maturing the spirit for a minimum of 12 years in a marriage of sherry-seasoned American and European oak casks. The American oak contributes sweeter, vanilla notes, while the European oak provides rich, spicy notes. The alcohol by volume (ABV) is 40%.
