Introduction
Michael David Winery Petite Petit is a bold red blend from the United States, produced in the California region and the Lodi appellation. The wine is made by Michael David Winery, where the Phillips family has been farming the Lodi soil since the 1860s and cultivating wine grapes since the early 20th century. Founders and brothers Michael and David Phillips are fifth-generation grape growers, and their philosophy emphasizes family legacy, quality wines, and sustainable farming practices certified by the Lodi Rules Program. The wine's label features two imposing elephants, symbolizing the 'larger-than-life' and substantial nature of the wine.
Wine Description
The wine is a blend of Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot. For example, the 2022 vintage is 87% Petite Sirah and 13% Petit Verdot, The aromatic profile includes show stopping aromas of rich plum, boysenberry jam, and black cherry. Other notes include blackberry jam, black licorice, blueberry, cocoa, vanilla spice, and subtle hints of honey. It is a dense, full-bodied, and substantial wine. The palate showcases rich, velvety flavours of blackberry compote, cacao nibs, and vanilla spice. It is loaded with pure black fruit and vanilla flavours that coat the palate, offering remarkable richness. Stylistically, it is a dark, robust, and deeply satisfying wine. The wine is aged in a mix of French and American oak. The finish is long and smooth, revealing a slightly dry texture that seems to linger. The ABV is typically 15% or sometimes 14.5%. The optimal drinking window is often suggested for enjoyment a few years after bottling, such as best from 2028 for the 2020 vintage. The wine is certified sustainable under the Lodi Rules Program.
