Product description

This rare vintage French grape brandy originates from Gascony in southwestern France, produced by Domaine de Millet (Château de Millet) in Eauze, the heart of the Bas-Armagnac sub-region. Crafted by the Dèche family, this single-year vintage expression represents a snapshot of the 1974 harvest. Distilled primarily from Baco 22A and Ugni Blanc grapes cultivated in the estate's iron-rich tawny sandy soils (sables fauves), the wine underwent a single continuous distillation in a traditional copper Armagnac alambic. The spirit matured for decades in local Gascon black oak barrels before being bottled directly from the cask at 84 proof (42.0% ABV) in a hand-waxed bottle, showcasing an extraordinary level of vintage-specific rancio evolution.

Spirit Description

This 1974 vintage displays a deep, dark mahogany hue with burnished amber highlights and thick, slow-running legs clinging to the glass. On the nose, it is extraordinarily complex, mature, and aromatic, opening with rich wafts of dried black figs, stewed prunes, dark raisins, and candied orange peel, quickly shifting into classic long-aged rancio notes of polished mahogany wood, antique leather, pipe tobacco, toasted walnuts, and a hint of espresso bean. On the palate, it feels exceptionally full-bodied, oily, and mouth-coating, delivering a concentrated wave of dark caramel, caramelized plum, and dark cocoa before developing warm, integrated oak tannins, clove, nutmeg, and sweet spice. The 42% ABV strength provides a firm, velvety structure that carries decades of oak influence with elegance. The finish is remarkably long, warm, and drying, leaving lingering impressions of dark chocolate, sweet tobacco, toasted pecans, and a soft Gascon spice.

Accolades

Domaine de Millet vintage releases—especially those from prime 1970s distillations—hold an elite reputation among collectors, master sommeliers, and Armagnac purists. Earning high ratings across independent review outlets and competitions like the Concours Général Agricole de Paris, spirits critics praise the Dèche family for their meticulous cask selection. Reviewers routinely note how half a century of oak contact transforms the estate's rustic spirit into a seamless balance of deep wood complexity and vibrant dried-fruit sweetness without becoming overly astringent or tannic.
