Product description
This vintage French grape brandy originates from Gascony in southwestern France, produced by Domaine de Millet (Château de Millet) in Eauze, the heart of the Bas-Armagnac sub-region. Estate-crafted by the Dèche family, this single-year release captures the specific terroir and harvest of 1979. Distilled primarily from Baco 22A and Ugni Blanc grapes grown in the area’s signature iron-rich tawny sandy soils (sables fauves), the wine underwent a single continuous distillation in a copper Armagnac alambic. The spirit matured for over four decades in local Gascon black oak barrels before being bottled directly from the cask at 84 proof (42.0% ABV) in the traditional 700 ml format, showcasing an exceptional vintage-specific rancio evolution.
Spirit Description
This 1979 vintage presents a deep amber-mahogany hue with warm copper highlights and thick, slow-moving legs in the glass. On the nose, it is rich, aromatic, and expressive, opening with wafts of dried black figs, candied orange peel, and prune jam, rapidly unfolding into mature rancio notes of polished mahogany, leather, toasted hazelnuts, pipe tobacco, and cocoa powder. On the palate, it feels full-bodied, oily, and mouth-coating, delivering a concentrated wave of dark caramel, caramelized plum, and dark chocolate before developing warm, integrated oak tannins, nutmeg, and baking spices. The 42% ABV strength provides a firm, velvety spine that carries decades of oak maturation with seamless balance. The finish is long, warm, and drying, leaving lingering impressions of dark cocoa, sweet tobacco, toasted walnuts, and a soft Gascon spice.
Accolades
Domaine de Millet vintage releases from the late 1970s hold top-tier respect among collectors, master sommeliers, and Armagnac purists. Earning high ratings across independent review outlets and competitions like the Concours Général Agricole de Paris, spirits critics praise the Dèche family for their meticulous cask selection. Reviewers routinely note how over 40 years of barrel contact transforms the estate's rustic spirit into a seamless balance of deep wood complexity and vibrant dried-fruit sweetness without becoming overly tannic or astringent.
