Product description
This vintage French grape brandy originates from Gascony in southwestern France, produced by Domaine de Millet (Château de Millet) in Eauze, the premier Bas-Armagnac sub-region. Estate-crafted by the Dèche family, this expression captures the single-year harvest of 1996. Distilled primarily from Baco 22A and Ugni Blanc grapes cultivated in the estate's iron-rich tawny sandy soils (sables fauves), the wine underwent a single continuous distillation in a traditional copper Armagnac alambic. The spirit matured for nearly three decades in local Gascon black oak barrels before being bottled directly from the cask at 84 proof (42.0% ABV) in the classic 700 ml format, showcasing an expressive midpoint of Gascon rancio evolution.
Spirit Description
This 1996 vintage presents a rich amber-copper hue with warm golden highlights and medium, elegant legs clinging to the glass. On the nose, it is vibrant, warm, and expressive, opening with bright notes of candied orange peel, dried apricots, baked apples, and prune jam, quickly unfolding into soft rancio accents of vanilla bean, toasted hazelnuts, cedar wood, and light baking spices. On the palate, it feels medium-to-full-bodied, silky, and round, delivering a rich wave of caramelized orchard fruits, dark honey, and crème brûlée before transitioning into gentle oak tannins, nutmeg, and warm cinnamon. The 42% ABV strength provides a clean, structural spine that allows the vibrant fruit intensity of the 1990s distillate to balance seamlessly with three decades of oak influence. The finish is long, warm, and smooth, leaving lingering impressions of dried stone fruit, toasted almonds, light cocoa, and a soft Gascon spice.
Accolades
Domaine de Millet vintage releases from the late 1990s hold strong critical acclaim among Armagnac enthusiasts, master sommeliers, and spirits collectors. Earning high ratings across independent review outlets and securing consistent honors at the Concours Général Agricole de Paris, reviewers praise the Dèche family for their precision in oak management. Spirits judges routinely note that while older 1970s vintages trend heavily toward dark tobacco and heavy wood, the 1996 vintage hits a perfect sweet spot of vibrant fruit brightness balanced with soft wood complexity.
