Product description
This mature French grape brandy originates from Gascony in southwestern France, produced by Domaine de Millet (Château de Millet) in Eauze, the premier Bas-Armagnac sub-region. Estate-crafted by the Dèche family, this expression represents a significant step up in age and complexity from their VSOP. Distilled from a blend of Baco 22A and Ugni Blanc grapes cultivated in the area's iconic sables fauves (iron-rich tawny sands), the spirit undergoes single continuous distillation in a copper Armagnac alambic. The designation "Hors d'Age" translates to "beyond age," indicating that the eaux-de-vie are aged in local oak barrels for a minimum of 10 years, though Domaine de Millet typically incorporates component brandies aged between 15 and 20 years. Bottled at 84 proof (42.0% ABV), it exhibits a rich, oxidized, and deeply structured rancio profile.
Spirit Description
This Hors d'Age presents a deep, burnished mahogany-copper color with dark amber legs in the glass. On the nose, it is intensely aromatic, complex, and mature, opening with rich wafts of dried figs, prune jam, dark raisins, and candied orange peel, quickly shifting into classic Gascon rancio notes of polished mahogany, leather, tobacco leaf, and toasted walnuts. On the palate, it feels full-bodied, velvety, and mouth-coating, delivering a concentrated wave of dark honey, caramelized plum, and cocoa powder before evolving into warming baking spices (cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg) and integrated oak tannins. The higher 42% ABV strength provides a firm, velvety spine that carries the heavy dried-fruit sweetness with elegance. The finish is long, warm, and lingering, leaving trailing impressions of dark chocolate, toasted almonds, sweet tobacco, and a soft, oak-driven spice.
