Product description

This structured and 'muscular' red wine originates from Canada, within the prestigious Okanagan Valley A.O.C. in British Columbia. Crafted by Mission Hill Family Estate a historic benchmark producer founded in 1981 by Anthony von Mandl Quatrain represents one of the crown jewels of the estate's elite Legacy Collection. Sourced from choice, organic estate vineyard blocks situated in the south Okanagan sub-regions of Osoyoos and Oliver, the vines are rooted in nutrient-poor, gravelly, and sandy alluvial soils over deep glacial till. The microclimate features intense summer heat and high solar radiation balanced by cool evening mountain breezes, allowing late-ripening red Bordeaux varieties and Syrah to achieve complete phenolic maturity while locking in a vibrant, mouthwatering natural acidity.

Wine Description

The 2021 Mission Hill Quatrain presents a deep, opaque garnet-purple color in the glass with vivid crimson highlights along the rim. Its sensory profile is exceptionally fresh, high-toned, and complex, delivering an elegant, intense, and precisely focused expression of south Okanagan terroir. The bouquet opens with a soaring display of crème de cassis, wild dark plums, crushed blackberries, and dark cherries, seamlessly layered with complex underlays of black pepper, dried violet, dark chocolate, tobacco leaf, graphite, and a subtle line of toasted French oak spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, muscular, and athletic, showcasing a succulent, power-packed core of black stone fruits, blood orange peel, and cocoa nibs. It is characterized by its outstanding inner energy and an incisive, mouthwatering backbone of natural acidity that cuts cleanly through the rich mid-palate fruit density. The mouthfeel is broad, velvety, and linear, driven by firm, fine-grained, and chalky tannins that glide into an extraordinarily long, dry, and savory finish accented by lingering notes of cassis, iron, and subtle spice.

Vintage Quality

The 2021 growing season in the Okanagan Valley was a warm, historic vintage marked by a dry spring and intense summer heat, followed by warm, sunny autumn days and cool nighttime temperature drops. This allowed fruit to accumulate high flavor concentration and deep skin phenolics while preserving vital natural malic and tartaric acids. Mission Hill harvested pristine, low-yielding fruit at peak physiological balance. The resulting 2021 Legacy Quatrain combines generous Okanagan fruit density with classical structural restraint, built to evolve and improve gracefully in a cellar over the next 10 to 18+ years.
